if ian doesn't take em then i will!

  • Nope, JBs don't taper at the bottom, my housemate has a pair of them in black... got them off eBay.

  • plus those arent 1"

  • What's peoples advice about v-brakes? I wanna put a rear one onto a new polo build, but i know nothing about them at all, any suggestions of some that are reliable but not bank-breaking ?

  • Buy an Avid Ultimate or XTR in good nick off the bay?

  • I use deore lx - general mid-level shimano.

Second hand I reckon you can get a bit more bang for your buck.

In my experience decent pads are where you should not skimp.
I bought some bike-shop cartridge pads when in a tight spot and they lasted approx 2 weeks each pair, and didn't really slow me much whilst they lasted.

  • I agree.

XTR v-brake pads are 50% off in Condor at the mo (still a bit pricey at 9.99 mind).

Sweet, just bought a Deore LX for £3 on ebay, got some kool-stop pads

  • Got my new frame built up today. Milwaukee bruiser, it rides like a dream!

  • hot! how are the brakes?

Powerful! Fly U brake on the back, odyssey evo 2 up front. Really easy to set up/adjust.

  • schweet!

V brake blocks and inserts (in interesting colours) on the Fibrax website on sale from 2.99. Certainly better than the stock shimano ones and worked fine for me.

No need to spend a lot on V brakes, as long as they are not the nasty plastic ones. Deore / Deore LX work great. All are easy to set up compared to cantilevers and very powerful. They need the 'linear pull' type levers to work properly, which are also inexpensive. My favourites:

  • Chan, where did you get the brake cable splitter?

  • are the u brakes more powerful than the road calipers? Can they be set up to be as powerful as v brakes?

  • Can anyone suggest a removable v-brake lever? I.e. With a hinge so it can be swapped between bars without removing grips

  • are the u brakes more powerful than the road calipers? Can they be set up to be as powerful as v brakes?

yes and yes, you can just tighten the springs. I've got the front springs fairly lose so it's still rear heavy braking

  • Can someone just briefly outline the whole v-brake thing for me please. Why are they better than calipers exactly? I seemed to have missed Polo Brakes 101.
