What happens if Bale isn't sold? Do Spurs have to return their new signings for a refund?
-
• #87203
If Bale isn't sold and the new signings fail to generate a CL place, we all piss ourselves inside out at their massive wage bill next season with no CL money to assist with their coffers as well as capitalising on the resulting fire sale...

I'm kind of not judging this transfer window against what arsenal are doing/not doing. It feels like we have strengthened throughout the spine of the team, created competition for places across midfield and attack, and made sure there's less of a drop off between those who might be considered guaranteed starters and those on the subs bench, mean squad rotation is a guarantee, as well as being able to put out strong teams in all competitions, so another run at the Europa and hopefully a better run in the FA cup.
If we get Eriksen, we would have turned one player into seven, and I'm wondering whether knowing Bale could possibly go was the spur for Levy to get in Baldini so that the money could be spent wisely...
Despite the strengthening I'm still perturbed by those who have now automatically put us into the champions league places, no point in winning the transfer window (if such a thing is possible) and then the team and players not performing. I'll be more confident of champions league football depending on how we're playing and what the injury situation is saying post Christmas...

If Spurs don't qualify for a CL spot this season than there's always next season.
Joking aside, anything less than 4th should be perceived as failure. -
• #87206
It'll be a modern miracle if they don't - given the squad they're building.

We're talking Spurs here.

comes round
Apologies guys.

The only consistency that they've got is that they're consistently inconsistent.

That's us.

@jaw, that's the sort of pressure from those who know and don't know about football, throwaway, as if success is guaranteed, is what worries me. It takes time for a team to become used to everyone else in the league wanting to beat you, not sure as a team and individuals we have gotten to that point yet.

it's a 6 pointer in the battle for 4th

@andyp, yep, but wondering whether its come too soon. Know how the media and the football thread like to jump to conclusions, we lose and its a disaster, we win and we're guaranteed champions league qualification. Same for Arsenal really, it'll be disaster or glory.
Looking forward to it actually. Hopefully it'll be a better game than the Chelsea man utd title decider from last weekend.. -

Any team that spends in excess of £95m on players and lets go of £23m worth of players (not including Bale here) will need to qualify for the CL or else they'll fall foul of FFP.
My best guess is that their wage bill will have gone up drastically. Can't see that letting go of the likes of Gallas, Dempsey, Huddlestone, Parker and Bentley would make the difference in that department.
Overall I am too very impressed with the way Spurs have handled the transfer window.
Letting go of a lot of deadwood and replacing them with younger, hungrier players. Making key signings whilst only losing one key player. The only smidge on all transfer dealings is missing out on Willian to Chelsea, outfoxed by a more powerful club, perhaps that is down to experience.

He probably still did somehow - cheekily wrote something into his severance agreement as he left.

@jaw, not sure whether we were going for lamela as well as Willian or we went for him instead of. The same with Eriksen, would we be in for him if we had gotten Willian and lamela, or was he the next in line when Willian went to Chelsea. Obviously lamela hasn't signed, though the deal is as good as done, and Eriksen we're I negotiations with.
I'm not so sure about the wage bill rising dramatically, think you're underestimating the money flowing through the premier league and I don't think any of the players we've bought in were, or are, on superstar money, so maybe 30-50k which with the wages taken off kind of equals out (hopefully)
Also with these two signings it will silence some of the fans who've been accusing us of stodgy defensive play. Lamela and Eriksen (if he comes) will give us a really creative attacking edge, once they settle in..

Someone piss on your Frühstück this morning?
What happens if Bale isn't sold? Do Spurs have to return their new signings for a refund?
He's 99% sold.
My best guess is that their wage bill will have gone up drastically. Can't see that letting go of the likes of Gallas, Dempsey, Huddlestone, Parker and Bentley would make the difference in that department.
We renegotiated our sponsorship deals positively, so some of the increase in wages will be nullified that way. Also, Levy would never put the business at risk by letting the wage bill go through the roof without a contingency plan.
The only smidge on all transfer dealings is missing out on Willian to Chelsea, outfoxed by a more powerful club, perhaps that is down to experience.[/QUOTE]
Experience? Try £££.

The litmus test for Spurs will be choking April. They are usually fine till then. Arsenal can't start a season, Spurs can't finish one.
-

nesbit - you've been gazumped for £2m which is small change these days. Period.
Watch Real Madrid over the next 4 days - rumour has it that a £45m offer is in the making for Suarez and that the player and agent are ready to make a move.
Some teams have got balls and nous when it comes to transfer dealings (incoming and outgoing) and for now Spurs lacked a little of that when the chips were down on the table in the case of Willian.
