  • I'm old enough to remember when Chelsea were proper shite

But presumably not old enough to remember the glory days of the late 1960s and early 1970s before an overambitious building programme and lack of investment by the Mears family almost killed the club. Chelsea's tough period was caused by lack of money. Our good times today are caused by money.

In the dark days of the 1970s our average home gates exceeded that ever so successful side Arsenal.

  • From what I've seen of Fulham's away support, 268 is a big turnout.

268 at home would be good for Fulham

  • Gus Poyet has just been appointed as Brighton manager until the end of the season.

  • I like Poyet. I hope he does well.

    This is interesting:

  • 1972 is my earliest footy memory, but a mates Dad was big Chelsea fan and would drone on incessantly about the 1970 FA cup side. I was thinking more the era when Kerry Dixon played. We averaged 30k crowds in div 3.

    Happy days.

  • Kerry Dixon joined from Reading in the summer of 1983 along with Pat Nevin, Joe McLaughlin, Nigel Spakman and Eddie Neiswicki (sp?). Those new signings transformed Chelsea and started its revival. At the end of 1982/3 Chelsea almost dropped to Div 3 for the first time. One game, away at Bolton, kept us up. Promoted as champions we then finished sixth in div 1. In 1987/8 the league introduced play offs for relegation as well as promotion. As fourth from bottom, Chelsea played Boro over two legs and were relegated. They returned as Champions next season with a record number of points. The relegation play off idea was dropped. Since then Chelsea have remained in the top flight and are one of only a few sides to be ever present in the Premiership.

Kerry Dixon joining Chelsea was the start of the good times. The shite days were earlier than that.

It's cos Craven Cottage is full of Aussies, Sirth Ifricans, Japanese and general London tourists wanting to watch a Premiership game. The 268 were probaly what's left of Fulhams original fanbase - although I didn't see Hugh Grant or Lilly Allen at the DW Stadium

I'll bow to your greater knowledge of Chelsea FC, though Kerry Dixon is inextricably linked with shite football in my mind.

  • Ronnie, you never saw him play. He was a tynan of his age.

3 days after taking 2,000 to Rome...

Out of interest, how many away games have you been to this season?

Here we go - how many games dick dangling....

  • I did see Dixon play a few times, also Clive fucking Walker too, especially when he got 2 when you came back to beat us 2-3 from 2-0 down at Maine Road.

    4 - 3 x league, 1 x pre-season friendly (if you call atrip to Barnsley friendly).

  • Ronnie -pay £6 a month and you can see Dixon and Walker on Chelsea TV - Sky 421 - just about every night as pundits.

They played better than they pundit.

I remember when Flash Walker went off to Sunderland and then scored for them in the second leg of the League cup semi at Stamford Bridge. A fan ran on the pitch and clocked him with a corner flag.

  • Clive Walker and Butch Wilkins were heroes as a kid... Peter Borota was also magnificent, I fancied myself as a goalie when I was a nipper... Happy days at the Bridge, I never go anymore... :[

oh, Well done super fan!! i'm very very impressed... Since you have made the trip to a northen shit-hole recently maybe you can have some simpathy for the travelling Fulham fans.

*Comically, I went to wigan away couple of seasons ago and there were even less fans.

  • who was the pyscho scottish player chelsea had?
    hang on john spencer?

Depressingly, Clive Walker and Butch Wilkins were the first of a genreation of footballers who were the same age as me. Something worrying happens when footballers are no longer people to look up to and you realise that you are too old to be one.

Peter Borota was wonderful. He was from the really crap period but very entertaining. Smioked like a trooper and ended up in gaol (rather than goal) in Yugoslavia, I seem to recall.

Only 2,000 to a stadium that holds 75K?

    We took 7,500 to Benfica(holds 65K) and 10,000 to Nurnberg(holds 45K)

  • I never go anymore... :[
