YouTube - Chelsea v Liverpool FA Cup 1982
Perhaps Liverpool should have done some research. Over 41,000 people were there that day.
And yes, we were in Div 2 and doing rather poorly.
A bagatelle Clive. One of those anomalies of history akin to when Wimbledon beat us in that Cup Final. I'm sure that was the only time Chelsea beat us until you became 'good' in 1996

Wow, those are impressive attendances. 17000 in 1987
Look how they suddenly shot up as you became goodThere's also the small matter of 47,592, 2nd highest in our history, when we finished 18th in 1948. Selective reading?

While Liverpool were riding high thanks to the largess of the pools money gien to them by the ghastly Moores family, Chelsea were in a financial mess. Success in the 1950s and 1960s and even greater success in the early 1970s led to the Mears family, who had founded and owned Chelsea since their inception, embarking upon grandiose ideas for ground redevelopment. The East Stand was built and still stands today. An economic down turn, rampant inflation and the oild crisis followed and the financing of the redevelopment became a problem. Players were sold to raise funds. By the end of the 1970s, Chelsea were fielding sides entirely made up of home grown players and any decent home grown players were sold on to deal with the financial problems.
The Mears family then sought to screw the club completely and almost got rid of the ground for redevelopment and a quick buck. Bates came in. Bought some players. Got promotion. Resolved the ground issue. Obtained further finance. Got the club back up to where they had been and into the Champions League and into a position where it could be sold. He had a number of options as to who to sell it to and chiose the one who was likely to be the most advantageousd to the club. And Abramovich came.
Just filling you in on some history Mike because history is clearly not your thing as you appear to not to have heard of Chelsea until very recently.

I've just been talking to a nice young ManU supporter - a genuine Manc with a comedy accent and the look of a member of the Shameless cast. I was staggered when he asked me who Alex Stepney was. What do they teach kids today?
Alex Stepney was a Manchester United player from an era when they didn't win anywhere near as much as they do now, and were also relegated, he has therefore been pretty much airbrushed from MUFC's inglorious history.
I hope you pointed out to the little git that Stepney's proudest moment was a couple of seasons as Manchester City's goalkeeping coach 10 or so years ago.

**36 Alex Stepney **
1966-1978, 539 starts, 2 goals
Every great team needs a great goalkeeper and Stepney was the last line of defence as United became the first English club to lift the European Cup in 1968. The bright lights of Wembley and Old Trafford must have seemed a long way away when Stepney started playing for Tooting and Mitcham in the Fifties but his talents were spotted by Millwall and Chelsea before Busby signed him for £55,000 in 1966. Two years later Stepney repaid his manager by making a crucial save in the European Cup final against Benfica. “I thought as Eusebio raced towards him that all my dreams of winning the European Cup were going to be shattered,” Busby said. “He shot with all his power but Alex held it.” -

Saha was active throughout the phase, goal was offside.
Everton started better and nearly pulled off a shut out after the "goal", but if you think they were the better side then you must have been in the only restricted view seat in the ground. Fellani had a good game, only Everton player who could effectively break up our play without resorting to the chelsea foul.
Stuck my nose in at the Che on the way home but it was mobbed and I couldn't see any familiar faces.

I was in the beer garden Pisti, i left about 11:30 in the end. got kicked out by the bar maids.. no bad thing there.
Good tight game I thought, it was a great one for the Arsenal, the ref did us no favours and Everton came out with a mix of playing football and killing our attacks with blocks and small fouls (like Stoke but with a player who can pass)
Fellini was at the heart of everything and Saha as a lone striker was world class, it took till the second half before we managed to get either off the ball. The offside goal was a joke BUT we didn't have a shot on target that half and never looked like scoring, Arsenal of two seasons ago would have lost that match and it would have been about the ref but this time we were patient, showed great mental strength ;) and got the win and could have had 3 or 4 more. some great attacking play and never looked like we would concede during the second half
Clichy was outstanding and Arshavin showed he is wanting to work his form back. kid who sits in front of me can't stand him and stated he'd eat his own shit if he scored... haha he so regretted that!
The fans were at their smuggest and in good voice, got to admit that, but for the first time in a long time there is a real belief at the ground. and we gave Moyes no stick for the first time.. real shame that.
As for saying Cesc should have been sent off for comments made to the ref, and that changed the dynamic of the game..
fucking i laughed, he must be getting media lessons from Holloway. priceless! -
