The modern one probably doesnt have a history of flange failiure.

I don't think using a 40 year old fragile style of crank is a great idea either as they are prone to failure are they not?
Modern/new all the way for me, none of that luddite shit for me :-)

i expected more from people who taught me everything i know in fixed gear, guys, seriously...
ah well let's move on then -

it's nice to have the old and classic component, but would you want to ride on those fragile component everyday?
think of it as preserving the original by using an alternative.

As for the hubs, the Electra Ticino road hubs is far better looking;
As well as their crankset which is a TA copy;

yes. when i bought RHCP's 2006 collector's edition Stadium Arcadium the first thing i did was copy the CDs and listen to copies only. somehow i managed to make exact copies :) maybe due to digital character of an issue :) these andel & co look "the same" only from like 20 feet or smthn. no good, sorry Ed :)
also, what about stuff like 80-ies dura-ace and sugino for instance? esp NJS stamped? are they flimsy as well? (serious question)

Yes. But riders like Eddie merkx were notorious weak legged. So breakages were few.
OK possibly not.
Even today you see square taper BB+crankset set-ups that have kept going for decades. Certianly not flimsy then. But in general, modern drivechain components have become lighter as well as stiffer. But not necessarily more resiliant IMHO. Not wanting to show my age. But most products today are not designed to last, as we are aware of their ever decreasing shelf life.

80's Dura Ace was not flimsy in the 80's However, 30 years on and the fact that Aluminium fatigues through use means they will be a lot flimsier now. Unless they are NOS of course.
No doubt still perfectly safe really though. ANyway, what's the worst that could happen - skid up, crank snaps and goes straight through your calf!

You could says it like a vinyl record that you convert into high quality AIFF files, so you won't risk wearing down the original vinyl.

I don't get the comparison, are you saying you should maybe buy an 80's crank and then make a mould of it and make your own copy of the crank. Put that copy on your bike while keeping the 80's one at home ?
Sounds like a lot of work -

you guys are a lot of fun

Sounds like a lot of workToo low tech.
Buy a 3D scanner and a 3D printer. Job done*.
(*not sure how strong the resin copy would be though)

Are there any decent external bearing options apart from the Omniums? Any good reason not to use a road crank?

the two hubs are modern rip-off (on the left) of a classic beauty (on the right), and were only pictured here to describe, why should one struggle to find vintage campy/copies cranks no matter how many modern look-a-likes there are produced.
