There are many on here

Dilemma time - I've only got Caol Ila in the house and fancy a whisky and ginger. Is it ever acceptable to despoil CI with a mixer?
Tragic waste. Do you have a bottle that was given to you as a gift but you don't like (I can depend on my brother to provide something in this line)? The ginger will erase most virtues and/or sins of any whisky, so why put it in something good?

Last night I had some japanese stuff for the first time since I started to really appreciate whiskey, was lovely. Really gentle with loads of sweet and vanilla in there.
Think it was Yamazaki but don't hold me to it

I'm trying to drink my way around the world via whisky this year, mainly to find out what I like. Bought myself a Talisker 10, friends got me some Jura 16, GF got me a Redbreast 12 for my birthday, going to Japan in January and will pick up a bottle, then just need a bourbon and maybe a rye from the USA. Really liking the talisker and redbreast, haven't popped the Jura yet.

After boring a friend over the weekend about how awesome whisky is, I now feel like I need to buy them a bottle as an early Xmas present.
Can anybody recommend a bottle of supermarket available single malt that is good for beginners? Perhaps a good all rounder for someone who's more used to drinking bourbon with a mixer. -

Highland Park 12, currently on offer in Waitrose. Excellent "middle of the road" whisky
EDIT: or Auchentoshan perhaps? More like a Irish whiskey than typical single malts

auchuentoshan is sweeter and Highland park peatier. If they smoke/like strong flavours go with the highland park, otherwise auchentoshan is a decent choice. But really, any highland malt (starting with glen) is a good choice for beginners. Steer clear of the massive islays for a bit, like laphroiag and bowmore. Unless it's 4am, then it's the best choice.

Cool cheers. I'll definitely look out for a glen. Maybe even just a Glenfiddich 12 which is what got me on to whisky. And they do them in 35cl bottles too #tightarsefriend

Shame to hear that said of what used to be a superior marque, even at the cheaper end. True, though. Used to have more personality.

You'll be glad to know I had it straight. A lesson to keep a bottle of Grouse or the like in the house in case of emergencies.
I did have a bottle of Mekong in the house, but there aren't enough mixers in the world to make that palatable.

What was the Caol Ila that we had at the Diageo tasting?
I fancy some more but there seem to be a lot -

always keep some grouse around, for guests who don't get it, a quick shot before heading out

half way down a bottle of Auchentoshen Classic presently - it's grown on me but it's a bit bland
Good beginners I reckon is the Glenrothes reserve (distillers expressions) - very smooth and tasty, but balanced

I have a bottle of Tobermory 10 at home. Very easy to drink, almost fresh, not overly peaty. I'd say it's a good beginners whiskey that's still interesting
