  • Penderyn Madeira: What a difference a bit of water makes!

Neat it's got a rather thin, overly chemical harsh taste, but when watered by about 2:1 it comes alive. Much richer, and full of subtle flavours. Given that they bottle at 46%, there's definitely some leeway to add more water at their end, as the neat stuff from the bottle isn't anything to be treasured.

Worth a half bottle at least.

  • Sorry guys, I totally forgot about thursday night and couldn't have made it anyway. Big planning application deadline. Next time I'll be there.

  • Anybody going to the Chivas and Juan Lopez tasting on the 3rd?

  • thinking about it, I've signed up for the Jura one

  • How was the cigar/whisky tasting?

  • I didn't go. I got back Monday after a week in South Africa abusing my liver and smoking several cigars a day. Wasn't up for the challenge.

Really would have liked to try the Juan Lopez though; I do like that marca a lot.

  • "Join us for a tasting of Glen Garioch Single malt whisky on Monday 30th April and experience five different whiskies from this historic distillery: the unpeated core range of Founder's Reserve and 12yo and the older lightly peated vintages of 1986, 1978 & 1994. Glen Garioch, situated in the Eastern Highland region, is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and has been producing whisky since 1797. All of their whiskies are non-chill filtered and bottled at the unusual ABV of 48% to retain more of the robust highland flavours and character. The evening will be hosted by Gordon Dundas, European Brand Ambassador for Morrison Bowmore."
    I RSVPd.

  • And me.

  • my only free night that week, I can't go realistically

  • Could you come irresponsibly?

  • Bring the other half.

  • I rsvp'd too

  • Just picked up a nice budget drop: Sainsbury's Dun Leire single malt, Cooley distillery, eight years old, very likeable indeed and a trifling £20. Recommended.

  • Bah. Conflicts with the Russian Circles gig. Back out.

  • Anyone know any good guides to bourbon?

  • As in "what to buy" or as in "the history of Bourbon?"

  • Nhatt - have a read through this as a starting point to understand the different between the terms that are used.

  • hey Whisky lovers. somehow I lost the subscription to this thread...

Nhatt - if what to buy I recommend Woodford Reserve.

  • On single Malts I was reading the posts above with interest, I too have noticed my taste has changed recently towards the more peated scale.

I <3 Ardberg, and the other night whilst in a posh food restaurant I had Jura Superstition, which was lovely and a great starting point for people yet to try peated single malt.

  • Superstition is nice, very sweet, touch of smoke, I like it I've had 3 bottles of it now

  • if you're developing a taste for the serious peat, look out for the octomore series from bruichladdich

  • hey Whisky lovers. somehow I lost the subscription to this thread...

Nhatt - if what to buy I recommend Woodford Reserve.

This man speaks the truth. Although Beam Black is not bad either.

Zed - you must come to the Whiskey Club with us at some point.

  • Yes I will deffo join you guys soon

  • Question: Am I tripping out or has Beam Black gone from 8 years to 6 years and been replaced with two other 'special' bottles?

  • Google says "no". There are both 6 and 8 year Beam Blacks. I knew it!

"A revamped Jim Beam Black, now with the title of 'triple-aged' which refers not to three different types of cask (as that would not be allowed under bourbon regulations) but to the 6 year old age statement, which is three times the minimum maturation period for bourbon."
