I've got a whiskey tasting this weekend at the Liberty Lounge thanks to a groupon type deal. I must remember to take notes otherwise I'll just end up pissed and still have to take a leap into the dark when buying a new bottle.
take a photo of the one(s) you really like. Tasting notes get a waste of time after a few

Good idea, but I'd quite like to know whether I have a taste for Islay, Highland etc, so I can make an informed decision on untried bottles.
-
• #554
That's just basic taste grouping though... unless you're completely new to it of course in which case write stuff down, get hammered next time

I did one ages ago and got really into the phenolics and peatiness and all that malarkey and paid no attention to the names or general types, so that's what I'm hoping for this time.

"Islay" and "Highland" both have quite a range. You can love Caol Ila and hate Laphroaig, or even find whiskies where you like one year's output and not another's (I'm very disappointed with recent Highland Park output, compared to the purity of older stuff). Then there's Speyside, where you could only make the vaguest generalisations.

^This.
Once you're done, get a copy of Whisky Classified for the best and simplest introduction to single malt you can find. It's an easy way of learning about the regions, their styles and about which other distilleries fall into basic flavour groups. That will help you choose which ones to try next time.

OK, so next Friday at Farringdon?
-
• #562
This is the likely to be mid-week Soho whisky drinking list. Not sure about the Farringdon Friday list. You are welcome to join us though in Soho.
-
• #563
Or I could join the Friday Farringdon thing if there are enough spare invites.
-
• #564
Think I'm allowed 3 guests (although, to be honest, they don't check). However, if there's a Wednesday in Soho next week, I can come along and then organise a Farringdon one the week after. Whatever suits.

I think we should aim for Wednesday in Soho if we can.
Any other takers?

Can someone recommend a decent blend?
