  • Pickles, Pigs & Whiskey: Amazon.co.uk: John Currance: Books

Was leafing through this today. Can't really go wrong with a title like that. There's a recipe for "Chocolate Chess Pie with Woodford Reserve Ice Cream" which means I will have to buy this. That and all the pickle recipes and the Jabanero sauce recipe and...

  • Drinking Woodford Reserve right now...

  • Whiskey globe! A christmas present from the girlfriend.

  • Drinking 12 year Highland park for the first time in a long time. Not drunk proper whiskey (feel free to flame away!) for a long time. It is ace.
Feeling sentimental and thinking about ordering Raw Spirit: In Search of the Perfect Dram: Amazon.co.uk: Iain Banks: Books
Anyone else read it / and / or have thoughts?

  • I hear the book is good. I will miss Ian M. Banks' writing very much.

ltc - that whisky globe is just awesome.

    whisky! consider yourself flamed!!

  • ^ I would like to blame FF/auto correct for that !

First death in a long time that drew tears for me. Still feel like a loss now.

I've read it, and not that long ago. It's not too bad, but in typical Banks style, he goes off on tangents left, right and centre. The anecdotes become a bit tiresome at times to be honest, when you pretty much just want to read about Whisky and him travelling around our beautiful old country. Bluntly: he talks a lot of shite in it and some of it is not great patter either. However, the good bits are good and there's some great wee nuggets of information in there and some insight into the lesser known distilleries. He does linger on certain distilleries or regions (Islay for instance, which is no bad thing really) and tends to skip over others in a sentence, which is bit frustrating.

In the end though, I enjoyed the read and it left me pining for home and wanting to drink more Whisky! Recommended, even just to wet the appetite. I'm planning a Speyside tour on the cycle with a friend this year and will probably be referencing this book.

  • Only just discovered this thread

Nearly finished this bottle that i bought myself just before Christmas.
Easily the tastiest thing I've ever encountered and a pain in the ass to track down.

  • Strong first post. Very strong.

  • I bought a litre of this home with me after the Crimbo hols. Nearly finished it. I'd go as far as to say its the most balanced whiskey I've had.

  • This was pretty awesome. But wanted something more balanced.

    ....soon...

  • Basically finished the Ardbeg. I'm thinking some good bourbon next. Noah's Mill worth a punt?

  • "good bourbon"

  • Yamazaki 18 it is then!

  • Pre-pub hair of the dog. Tame Impala, eye drops and Bowmore 15.

  • Yamazaki 18 it is then!

Good but not quite Hakushu ;P

  • The new office dram

  • Had some Royal Lochnagar 12 the other night it's very sweet and easy going, and cheap.

  • Good but not quite Hakushu ;P

    Oh come on!

Are you talking bourbon barrel? Because that is the peng (and also the only one I've tried).

  • Lagavulin 16 is THE best whisky I've tasted - even better than Ardbeg Oogy

    :)

Bourbon barrel is crackin' the straight 18yr is something else. Tasted at a Suntoury tasting night and was blown away.

Yes it is..! Just ordered another bottle.. :-)

  • ^^^ Mixed reactions from the ops team at work. I'm reserving judgement until at least the next tasting
