  • Bourbon - had a taste of my mate's High West Double Rye at the weekend - he was raving about it, saying how smooth it was - fuck me, it was rough as a badgers arse! Nasty stuff

so, remain unconvinced - they all taste like Jim Beam to me

  • I'd always be suspicious of somebody trying to push me a whisk(e)y as "smooth", because it usually also means "bland". I want something going on in the glass; don't mind if it's subtle as long as it's interesting. Most bourbons just don't have anything going on.

  • agreed - fairly basic flavours going on

  • Got a bottle of Glenrothes 2001 for le grandad and some Nikka from the barrel for mein farter. Will obviously be testing them out once opened...

  • I'm normally a scotch drinker but I've been thinking about treating myself to a bourbon in the new year. Been looking at Noah's Mill or Hudson Baby Bourbon (purely for the "sonic maturation")

    Any recommendations?

  • New distillery opens - in London, of all places

Spoken to that chap a few times and he said he was in line to set this up.. Good work

From a couple of pages back....

Picked up some Woodford Reserve for £22 at Asda the other day. Loving it, not really been that into bourbon before now.

Nice bourbon is really good... like with most spirits our first interaction with them is something cheap an nasty. Probably drinking way to much and vomming everywhere, thusly putting you off a spirit for no really good reason

I'd rather drink Woodford Reserve than most blended whiskies. Not in the mood for a complex single malt or single cask whisky every day.

I mentioned I got given a bottle of this back in July; kicks everything you thought you knew about 'good' bourbon into a cocked hat.

  • I've never run across Hudson's. My brother-in-law I had a long conversation about this a couple of months ago - he doesn't really rate a lot of the small batch bourbon stuff in the US. I have to agree with him. Most of the stuff I have found has not really been worth the premium after I've tried it.

Woodford Reserve, Single Barrel Jack Daniels, and Rip Van Winkle (the 12), Eagle Rare (10 but the 17 is great) are all really good options that are a step up from Jim Beam, Standard Jack Daniels and Maker's Mark.

But that's personal preference. Drink them all! Let your taste buds sort them out.

    Good plan

  • Picked up this as a Christmas treat:

Was either going to be a gimmick or really nice, luckily it's the latter. Incredibly smooth.

  • The Doris gifted me a new bottle of Hakushu bourbon barrel

  • Did you finish the other one already? Strong work.

  • was drinking Lagavulin 16 the other night - oh my word, what an amazing whisky - beautiful long vanilla creaminess after massive peat and smoke

I don't know whether this is my new favourite........certainly on a par with Ardbeg Uigeadail though much smoother and less in your face

  • I really like the Lagavulin 16.

  • I got a bottle of Rittenhouse Rye yesterday http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/rittenhouse-straight-rye-whisky/

    Highly recommended

  • Lagavulin 16 yr old is only £38 at Costco

  • Just cracked open my first bottle of Noah's Mill bourbon, very very tasty!

  • Got an unexpected bottle of Bowmore small batch reserve and a Talisker for Christmas - very happy!

  • Just picked up a bottle of Ardbeg 10. It smells amazing..

  • Drink it lad, it's not a perfume.

  • Yeah, I couldn't hold out any longer... Drinking it now. Its really really bloody good. More mellow than I was expecting but in a good way. Perfect for winter!
I like how it doesn't have any colouring and hasn't been chill filtered too.

  • My mum bought me a bottle of that 8 year old blended from Aldi that won 3 gold medals. Its really rather nice.

  • Was drinking Scallywag and Ardmore at parents, both of which were good. Got a bottle of Tomatin Legacy to try now. Also got two glencairn glasses for Xmas, which are excellent.
