  • Looks quite jolly, although the extraneous ' in specials made me wince

  • I may head there after 5:30 for a quick snifter, but it's Easts 5th birthday today so I'll be heading over there

  • I've heard back from Patrick - as long as we don't have a ton of bikes they're OK to take upstairs onto the patio. The stairs are narrow and the walls are bright white so gently gently please.

Text me if you need access to upstairs without going through the shop. PM if you need my number although it should be on the thread.

BQ - I'll do my best to get there in time to share one together.

  • Got around to tasting the Hakushu bourbon barrel finally, its quite a surprise from what I was imagining it to taste like.

Quite pale in the glass and a strong peppery burn on the nose, almost like a slightly sweeter talisker but without the smoke, it has that distinctive Japanese whisky banana vibe to it, which is a good thing!

It mellows nicely with a bit of ice or water and the bourbon flavour comes through better. Undiluted, it has a strong burn which can mask some flavours. I like to use ice because it slowly dilutes and you can taste the changes over time.

Overall, recommended but maybe not for first-timers. Anyone who enjoys a bit of Yamazaki and some of the pepperier Scottish drams will really appreciate it.

  • Thank you well is it. It's on my list to acquire.

  • Heading to Soho shortly. See you there, guys.

  • Nice one guys. Thanks for bringing us in. Nice to meet some new faces.

  • Thanks for making it Hippy. Mands, good to meet you, I hope your trip to Easts wasn't too bad and good to see itsbruce again as well. Must do that again when I don't have a massive head cold.

  • Yeah thanks for having me! It was very nice and a pleasure to meet you all.

  • I look just the same whether you have a massive head cold or not, I'm sure.

Thanks for signing us in, guys. Will have to spend longer, next time.

  • Enjoyed it, nice to meet some new faces.. and a pleasure as always with the more familiar ones

Really looking forward to being able to use the garden again

  • Picked up a bottle of Nikka Miyagikyo 10yr earlier. It smells very deep and has a very subtle smokey note to it. In the mouth, its quite sweet at first with a relatively strong burn and not much smokiness but that slowly creeps up in the aftertaste which is really good. Its very Yamazaki 12 with the immediate taste but weightier with more caramel. It opens up nicely, and becomes quite herbal.

The aftertaste is definitely this drink's party trick and it stays pleasant rather than making your mouth taste like the back seat of a mini cab after ten minutes. Its also a good all year round whisky, being relatively light and sweet but with a subtle smokiness. A bit of sweetness and saltiness stays too, so its not so drying.

    Anyway, just my first impressions.

  • Could be OK. Most bourbons cocktails have a cherry garnish (Manhattan, Bourbon and Coke) so it's certainly in the flavour range. I'd be interested in your take on that.

ok as a mixer, would appeal to younger drinkers who favour sweeter liquors (ie monkeyshoulder), distinct medicinal cherry aftertaste if drunk unmixed.

i discovered two other varieties: spiced and honey tea; don't intend to sample them though

  • I was drinking that Nikka on Friday - have to agree it's a real 'drinker'

  • Teacher's tastes a bit like bells .

  • I've got a bottle of the Miyagikyo 10 too, tried the 15yr in Japan a few months ago and it was spectacular. Looking forward to opening it greatly.

  • If the 15 is an improvement over the 10 then it must be damn good! The 10 is probably going be a regular appearance in my kitchen...

  • I missed a Japanese tasting night on Thursday, should have gone really.

  • GF's Mum won a bottle of anCnoc 12 and a Glenlivet 12 in a raffle, and gave them to me!

both very nice - having a large Glenlivet just now......

  • mate, saving the scotch for me and thee in Scotland this summer!

  • yes yes, will have plenty!

  • Picked up a litre of Glenrothes Robur Reserve at the duty free. Very pleasant.
