  • 7:47 round the Nordschleife on electricity. Looks alright, sounds all wrong...

  • ^ That's pretty damned impressive. Does look very different, the way the car holds speed so well. Shame they didn't give telemetry as I'd love to see accel out the corners.

  • Sparky, just hire it. Having an older car thats not in regular use means that things fail more often and needs more work like brakes sticking, tyres squaring and bearings failing. This all cost money which if you can afford, fine but why have the hassle just hire and use. That way you know it will start and work. Or if you are mechanically inclined do you have some where to work in the dry, warm and the light?

  • Not to mention that they are stupidly overpriced. Piss easy to work on though.

  • Richie- I was chatting to my mechanic yesterday and he recommended looking out for an old Pit ambulance as a) they were manual, and b) they just sat outside the pit waiting for an accident to happen- so many did 3,000 miles per year or less, but got serviced twice a year.

Might not be many around any longer, but a much better option than the auto Police one's as they are all FUBAR'd.

  • In other news I stuck to the speed limit religeously for ~435 miles yesterday, and the car did 32-34 mpg, which is astounding.

  • Still need an exhaust though.

  • Bloody hell Dammit. I am jelly.

Last couple of tanks have been returning an astonishing cost of 83p/mile (on 98). Gonna check the banks again. Looks like I've gone back overlean. How the fuck does that happen?

  • 11.5 to one should be OK on 97/8RON with ally heads and EFI etc? What does Super come up at in Oz?.....Won't you run out of injector much quicker with E85?

My motor is running just under 11:1.

Really enjoying your work btw. The car looks like it will be an awesome sleeper....aside from the noise ;)

11.5 comp fine at 98, but perfect with E85, can run way more timing and it will keep cooler. yep uses 30% more fuel, stock injectors are good for another few more hp, but are getting close to max.

pistons have been relieved. all back together and fired last night, running like dog (sound like topfueler at idle). checked valve train set-up and pushrods are a fraction too long, so valves are staying open a poofteenth. from zero lash to when the rocker hits pedestal is 2.5 turns, i need 1-1.5 turns. so my guess is 25-50thou too long. just ordered adjustable pushrod checker today so will check properly.

i missed out all the juicy bits and dummy spits in the middle.

  • Well done on getting it back together. Shouldn't be too much drama to measure up and sort out a new set of pushrods, right?

Bit of progress on mine. Frame connectors are in, boxed into the floorpan and all painted back up. Engine bay is completely stripped and getting painted along with the engine this week.

Still got all the fuel lines to replumb, some of the brakes and sort out all the wiring for the new EFI. Think the tank is going to have to come out and be sumped for the new electric pump which is going to be a pain in the arse. Still should be back into re-assembly pretty soon.....might even be finished for some greasy autumnal road action, I've mixed feelings about that.....Can't wait to hear the bloody thing running though!

Pic attached of the new frame connectors - fortunately all the pans were completely solid, not bad for nearly 50yrs old sheetmetal!

  • Is there a build thread for this car somwwhere Jung?

  • Nah - that was the only bit of fabrication really. Interestingly the factory was going to have those connectors as stock on the high HP cars in the early 60's (Max Wedge and Hemi) but dropped it because of what was an almost inconsequential cost increase. Definitely need them with the new lump as otherwise it's going to twist up like a pretzel and convertibles are notorious for cracking sheetmetal at the base of the rear window. I'll post some more updates as it gets closer though...

  • anyone want a bmw 325i engine?

Taen out of a car 3 years ago and i know nothing else.

  • can you fit it to my SD1 and make it work?

  • Put it in the MG.

  • Have a cylinder sticking out of each side, a la BMW flat twin motorbike engine?

  • Alfa boxer engine will be better for that look.

I was afraid someone would say that. Thing is, I want to have one for a long time, fettle it, improve it, drive it. But at the moment it wouldn't get driven a lot as I'm working up in London. There is a garage in Norwich I could keep it in.

  • It seems that the only reason to have a Minor (to attract women) is a void cause as you appear to have a girlfriend! ;)

    lol wut?

  • You high, pigsy?

  • very clean underbody. california or desert car?! surprised they don't run another under the seat anchor points side to side. the tank is a straight forward thing,as long as they clean it before cutting and pressure test afterwards.

got adjustable pushrod tool today. got the length, just need to do some ringing around tomorrow.
