  • Makes a Quaife box seem like a bargain, even if you would need the 996 installation kit. Almost certainly not helical gears though.

  • Yep, straight cut dog box. NVH is not going to be its strong point. Suitably bonkers though.

I've had a long conversation with them - that's for the Mezger series of engines and (they've tried) cannot be made to fit an M96, apparently.

The M96 and the Mezger stagger their cylinders in opposite directions, so packaging and mounting is quite different between the two.

I do wonder whether a motorsport gearbox might be the best choice here, if we could get quieter gears of course.

  • You could talk to SQS in the Czech republic?

  • I looked at their sequential shifter after you mentioned it, at €3,600 for that, I would imagine that the whole gearbox would be quite a lot more - but I have not spoken to them.

  • You're well and truly down the rabbit hole huh?

  • No point half-arsing it.

  • No, not at this point. I agree! Have you looked at Holinger? Aussie engineering co that builds race car gearboxes but their site mentions road car box conversion. They've certainly built Porsche specific stuff too.

  • Big shoutout to the Darwin Award candidate I saw doing 70 up the M5 last week in one of these, with just a baseball cap and a pair of spectacles for protection

  • instant bug supper.

    mad.

I have had a conversation with them, IIRC they wanted me to speak to their UK rep and it all went silent.

All of these companies want to make stuff they know they can sell - which is totally understandable. So they make stuff for the GT3/turbo. Convincing them that there is a market for the base C2 is an uphill struggle.

  • Any recommendations for used car dealers in North London?

  • I'll give it a watch, thanks! This is one of the last small bumper mk2s, so has indicators on the left side of the wheel, RHD mounted window wipers and lots of other semi-facelift details like the modern grill, but still has no power steering or electric windows which is ideal in my book.

@nefarious the Clio is great, it's just a little too modern and doesnt feel special enough for a weekend only car - I'll be keeping it until I can find a suitable garage in east London to store the Mk2, until then it'll be living in Scotland at my parents house.

  • Good to see another MK2 on here! Mine is a 1.6 GTD. Currently sorting cooling issues, near front wishbone, rear bump stop, handbrake cables, alternator... Goes on! But it's in great condition and actually pretty nice to work on! Love driving it too. We lived in the Cotswolds with ours until recently. Have you been along to the car show at Whichford? Hopefully that will be on again when all this is over, through the summer it usually runs every month. Massive range of amazing cars!

  • Ah that all makes sense. It looks fun, but I get that it might not feel as special.

    Love the golf too tbf.

I just went back through my emails with Hollinger - it's kind of funny, in some ways. The guy I was talking too simply wouldn't accept that I was talking about a Carrera engine, would only talk to me about the stuff they made for the Mezger. Also, it was AUD $38,000 for the (wrong) gearbox.

  • What about Hewland if you’re going all out? They’re not all sequential either I think? Love the sound of a straight cut dog box. Possibly not for driving to the shops though.

  • How was the baseball cap staying on?!

Didn't realise they were LHD only. Even more impressively nonesensical.

I'd really want helical for a road car, I suspect the sound of a straight-cut gearset would be hugely amusing for maybe 2 minutes, then really annoying.

  • It must have been firmly wedged on. was definitely a left-hooker. I was trying to encourage my family to take a picture but they didn't really understand the reason for my enthusiasm

  • It brought this sad and horrific incident to the forefront of my mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kemistry

  • Probably, though you’ve got a huge chunk of sound insulation that you wouldn’t have with them echoing around a race car - I think the big clunk going into first every time in a car would get to me first.

  • As @lynx so accurately predicted, the roof motor on the z4 has given up the ghost. I instantly rang the guy he recommended in Bristol, who recommended in turn a much nearer friend of his in Hook. Said guy is fixing and repositioning the motor in the boot for the princely sum of £200 inc VAT. Apparently this takes about 2 hours. An excuse for a drive across Sussex and Hants is welcome as it will include a pub lunch in one of my favourite boozers, in Longparish about 10 miles from Hook. Thanks again, Lynx!

  • These guys are good
