Anyone going to Goodwood next week?

You can get a B6 Audi S4 Avant for about 6k, I think they look handsome af, 350bhp V8, the only thing about them is that timing chain tensioners can go and require the engine to be taken out

If you fancy a project, I'd love to see the results of an IS300 wagon with a supercharged 1JZ. or you could go supercharged 1UZ...
Please build one of them.

270,000 miles on the same suspension would be possible in the US
As a merican i always find these sort of "in the US" generalized comments funny. It's a fairly large place. Almost 4 million square miles in fact. We have lots of different types of roads. In fact, in my state, most of the roads are gravel. You can get there you need to and avoid them, but the quicker route is frequently over gravel.

In my experience, in any of the major cities you've got about as much chance driving 270,000 miles on the same suspension as you have of walking it! :)

Yeah. Warmer climate is usually pretty good, but northern, and especially northern cities... Forget it. Roads can be so shitty it's unfathomable.
The best roads I've seen were south east.
The worst are anywhere in the "rust belt"...

What I mean by that is that a very large percentage of vehicles I see on the road in the US would have failed an MOT five years ago in the UK.
-
• #49717
Aha, that’s different....no MOT at all in California aside from emissions (which is heavily cheated on.) Some of the death traps you see rattling around defy belief. Bald tires even on fancy cars are virtually the norm. No wonder the whole of LA turns into demolition derby at the first sign of rain...

A side note, I’m in an Uber on my way from downtown Manhattan to JFK, my cab driver is driving like an incredible douchebag, but he’s making progress through shocking traffic, so I’m leaving him to it.

Hmm, he’s driving down the hard shoulder now

This.
When I moved to NYC I was amazed how fucked almost every car was. Some looked like utter deathtraps, and cable-ties (not in an affected drift car way) seemed to be a pretty normal way to keep your car together.

I’ve had an uber driver do that on the way to city airport. I did not complain.

n00b question so please don’t flame me!
I’m looking to buy a car, 2nd hand 15-20k budget, I want a sportyish hatchback or similar and automatic.
The car I like is the new A class but it doesn’t get great reviews.
Other options A3, Golf, 1 series or 3 series - am
I missing anything? Also it will be my first car for 12 years - is insurance going to be a pita? -

Focus ST? - think there's an automatic option and easily within budget. A Civic of some sort?

Hyundai i30N getting good reviews

M2?
I just picked my car up, stereo now sounds awesome. Very impressed with both the sub and the new Morel speakers.
270,000 miles on the same suspension would be possible in the US, I don’t think it’d be possible in the UK - the shocks would have been blown out for what, 50% of that cars mileage?
