  • Watch out for rotting subframes, and cd's that skip

  • 2012 volvo v70 d2 ... engine and gearbox replaced

+1 to what diable has said.

It needs to be a pretty big discount imo to negate your difficulty selling and discount if you resell. If you could get a Volvo warranty and it's a really good saving then it could be a good way of buying a decent car you can drive into the ground.

Also why is the seller selling? If I had an expensive but not too old car that had an engine replaced I'd be expecting to keep it.

  • +1 to being wary. Reselling it won't get easier with time

  • Haha but I cant afford a 1969-73 tuned porsche sadly.
The 350z are not my favorite looking car either but they are very nice to drive!

  • How's about that fookin Singer/Williams engine then?

  • @hugo7 @kboy

Sound advice probably. Not worth the uncertainties involved.

  • D2 engine is the Ford 1.6 job yes? Reason for replacement likely from standard dpf self destruction (doesn't regeneration properly so fills sump with fuel, fuel isn't a great lubricant so top end of engine wears out at a massively increased rate = bin). Same for the mazda but weirdly when those engines are in a Ford they don't do it very often at all.
Gearbox is a weird one though in a v70 gearboxes ate not an issue, in the c30/50 cars it's a 100% ford box but they don't have problems AFAIK.
Unless it's many k under book or you are intending to keep it for years (therefor resale hassle minimised) maybe a no

  • Interesting to hear everyone's input, thank you. As I basically don't really like or understand cars (wrong thread I know!), I tend to buy when the old one is past saving/ can't be trusted to do its stuff anymore and then keep the next one until it's in the same state. As for the dpf thing the d2 engine wasn't the ford jobbie from my12 onwards iirc and supposedly did better in the regeneration department. With that kind of mileage on a relatively new car it seems unlikely the regeneration hasn't been allowed to happen regularly? Anyway fuck it, I'll get a bit more expensive one that's seen more normal use.

  • My pride and joy is my Audi A2, all aluminium so no rust, but the paint is 160000 miles and 15 years old. It has lost any shine and depth it may have had. Whilst looking at cleaning, polishing and paint renovation videos came across this chap. "Whitedetails" Here he does a detail on a 22000 km Bentley Brooklands that has been trailered to him from somewhere over the channel for a weeks work. Surprising how many faults on cars direct from the factory that he puts right.

  • Few suburban diesels were bought,
    many were sold.

  • Ah kk, didn't know they changed it, yamaha supply a few engines to volvo so maybe it's from them?
Read a report on a <30k miles 4 year old xc90 with a d5 that had terminal failure due to basically been used as a shopping car. Was in volvo evry 9-12 months instead of by milage yet still happened.
Saab 2.0 and 2.3 ecotec (gm derived) turbo petrol used to have horrific problems with sludging if not used right.

  • Insane! I thought I had OCD.

  • There are other words available to use in order to describe a car.

In other news, I've not had a drink for seven years as of today so I bought some new suspension to celebrate how parched I am.

In order to maximise the outrage check this out: the suspension currently on the car is not only fine, it's actually a few thousand miles from new. And I'm drinking an alcohol free beer.

  • Just got back from Reading to pick up a hardtop in elusive Montego Blue. Pretty chuffed as the first reply I received after posting a wanted ad on a MX-5 forum was 'lol, good luck mate'. All clips and heated rear window cable included too đź’Ş

  • wanna go ramraiding?

    do people still do that?

  • I'm hesitant to ask, but euph?

  • If the cords are exposed it would fail an MOT and need replacing, if not it is legal and whether you replace it or not depends on how much it worries you and how deep it is :)

  • Don't worry. I have had a few hire cars for work and holiday purposes in the last 18 months. None have been as satisfying as the Skoda Yeti to drive. I am sure it is aimed at pensioners. On Sunday I drove from Upleadon to Putney and was very pleased to manage 48mpg.

  • Only 48mpg?

    I get 43mpg out of a 290hp 3ltr diesel.

  • Congratulations! I hit that milestone last week. We have come a long way.

  • Maybe I'll have to try less hard? Was country roads, then motorway and then Sunday evening crawl into town.

Previous car was a very old CRV that drank petrol.

  • Crawl into town might have killed it. I'm almost all motorway for 90% of my driving...

If it helps, i'm lucky to get 30mpg on the motorbike for the commute.

  • I get 48 mpg commuting a 1500kg squarish high-top van, the low-top version of which has a 0.37 Cd for a 1.04 m^2 CdA...

  • Unfortunately not, that was one of the main motivations in getting the hardtop. Shame really considering how prone MX-5's are to rust but hoping to stay on top of it as much as I can before it's terminal. Driving back with it fitted amazing how much of a difference it makes to the feel of the car.

  • Really love the colour...
