What are your thoughts on buying a car that's got ~190k miles on it but has had its engine and gearbox replaced recently (all documentation present and looks legit). It kinda scares me off as I know very little about cars but I guess a lot of people are like me and it might be a good opportunity to get the car I want at a decent price.

It's a 2012 volvo v70 d2

At that age and mileage you should be able to get a warranty?

I'd like to debadge my car. It's a 1999 in a light silver/bronze colour. Will it likely leave a shadow mark/ darker paint behind the lettering?
-
• #36181
Nope.
TBH I haven't read it for 4 years or so, so the chances of it still being Johnny the hat Tipler or Steve the editor were slim.

They featured Richard's lightweight 996 which is why I started reading it.
Staggered to find he'd spent £100k on that car. I can see how you get to that figure but ouch.

what is the "as it will be" for your car?
have I missed something, or you decided to go for the LS7 conversion after all?!

I'm afraid that if I talk about that the hurricane of moaning might well blow this thread straight out of the forum, so I'm not going to.

Isn't that the fun of the internet? I genuinely miss your updates, beats the usual fantasy parade any day.

Replace? Looks worse in the picture than IRL.
-
• #36188
Looks worse in the picture, but will it perform the same at 70 on a motorway?
-
• #36189
Well, yeah. Gotta be replaced I guess.

Can you lift the deeper bit to see how far it goes with a key? I ran a deeper curb peel on my old contis no prob. Also seen peeps running tyres wid bits hanging off. Hard to know if superficial tho...

We have a space saver
The deeper bit is perhaps 2-3mm deep. No threads visible.

Yeah thanks for the advice. Will probably give it a miss, false economy and all that.

A Q: why are 350z so cheap in the uk? They are like almost half price compared to ger france and at least sweden.
Where is my best bet to find a lhd one in uk? Or are they non existant perhaps?

Brexit.
Just get a RHD one, easier to overtake through right hand corners.

Could you do it straight to pm, I love your tales

Bring back the porsche posts! Interesting to see the journey from average 996 to a nice one. Cars ain't cheap so forget about the people moaning about it. No one seems to mind others pouring time and cash into their old junk. It good to see the full spectrum of car tinkery.
I've already sunk about the purchase price of my project into fixing little bits on a car that has no value, except to me! -

Caus they look like a hairdressers car? 😎 (unless tuned)

My guess is a suspension refurb. It's the sort of age where replacing the bushes and shocks etc would bring noticeable benefits, though on a cabriolet there must be limits due to the inherent flexibility of the car.

I know it's controversial, but I do think the mk1 Cayman are overall one of the most attractive modern cars Porsche have made.
(fwiw I too like the Porsche updates - imo most of the negativity comes when you query and rationalise the unrationalable bits)
