I'm lost too.
Race cars, from what I have seen, aren't concours cars. They are cars built to be driven round a circuit and to win races. They are built to handle, hence why there is some leeway in suspension and mechanical tech from the original period to allow modern parts, especially for safety. Have seen a couple of cars that the doors are the skin and the frame has been drilled so that the doors are lightweight. Also different classes of racing allow a different set of allowable modifications.
