I know Jemery Clarkson says this, but it's not actually true, it's just a fun soundbyte. All engine positions have their drawbacks, I'd say a rear engine in a sports car is much less a flawed starting point than one hanging out over the front axle.
I think the key argument would be that the Cayman never seems to be made (or at least not publicised) in a comparable spec to the 911. It's as if they can't afford for their mid-engined sports car to be faster than their signature rear-engined car because of all the effort put into arguing the rear-engine layout's case.
Assuming Porsche have actually never built a comparable pair, has anyone modified a Cayman to be comparable and testable against a 911?

Mid engined, bit faster than a 911.
All manufacturers have a hierarchy, Porsche's isn't there to convince the world rear engined is faster than mid-engined, it's just there to sell a 911 for more money than a Cayman.
Even when they released the 911 they had a mid-engined car that was quicker :
And then there's this:
Anyway, point is, Porsche don't argue the rear engined layout is better than any other, it's just how they do the 911.

How many different engine/gearbox formats have you owned and driven and what is your favourite?

Carrera GT and the Le Mans cars don't count, they're in completely different price brackets.
What's the second one?

904 It's in a different price bracket too, maybe a couple of mil.
Of course they count, they count more, they are Porsche saying 'we're going to build the fastest car we can and it's going to be mid-engined'. If they wanted to prove rear engined was faster they wouldn't do that, cos it proves the opposite.

my mate and i have stopped sharing cars as 1/2 a day isn't quite enough. sharing a race car would mean alternate weekends.
if anyone wants to come along as a passenger in the world's slowest racing car, they are more than welcome. my next day is the GP circuit at brands! something that i have wanted to do since i was a boy. def bucket list track.
