  • Oil pressure warning lights are designed to come on before the pressure drops to a dangerous level. It's the point of their existence.

Maybe if Crop was caning it round Cadwell your comment that 'usually by the time it comes on there is damage' might be right, but if s/he was idling in traffic it just ain't true.

Especially if the light might be an oil level light, which I'd guess a 2010 Goof would have and which would probably come on before a pressure light in the circumstances...

  • Red light on a 2010 golf is oil pressure

Orangey yellow one is oil level

Top to bottom of dipstick is approx 1 litre and a 1.2 golf would hold around 4 litres

Once again, how is oil pressure produced in a engine? Please google what PSI oil pressure warning switch operate at, and what roughly what PSI oil pressure is expected at idle, as you won't believe how wrong you are.

EDIT - Does oil level only come on before start up and a few seconds after?

  • With a oil pump, mostly.

Oil pressure switches have various levels at which they activate and different engines operate safely at different oil pressures and different revs, hence the need for variable switches. I'm not sure what you want me to google really. You wouldn't want to fit a switch set for an old JCB to a superbike.

I have a car on which the oil pressure light is always on when hot and below 2krpm. It's designed to be like that. The warning light on my old 911 regularly stayed on at altitude when at low revs and hot. Neither seized. I once tore out the sump plug on my old Beetle on a speed bump and it dumped it's oil. I saw the light and turned it off quickly. It went on for another 15,000 miles in my hands.

I'm not saying you can't break an engine running the pressure too low, of course you can, I'm saying just because the light came on doesn't mean that the engine is toast.

Why do you think they fit a warning light?

Firstly find out how a piston engine creates oil pressure, it is not the oil pump. Here you go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f2fcbTh5yw

The last few manuals I have read, if the oil light comes on stop car immediately, do not drive the vehicle again, get transported to the dealer etc.

  • Also I'm not even mentioning a siezed engine, I'd be wary of a 4yr old car having run out of, for peace of mind taking the rocker cover off to see if there is any damage, on an OHC engine. Also poping the sump off and checking the big ends for any marks. The compression and leak down test will give you an idea of the condition of the cylinders/rings.

  • All stuff i either don't know how to do or am unable to.
Not looking forward to trying to tell the guys at the garage that I want that done.
The garage in question is Downs Park Garage on Andre Street.

  • Are you planning on keeping the car or getting rid?

  • Not my car, but the owner plans on keeping it for the foreseeable future.

  • It would be a paranoia for me.

They fucked up, there fault. Go in and see what they say.

  • ^ Just to add to the above, I borrowed my sister's mk5 Golf GTI recently. Had the oil level light come on when I was in the arse end of nowhere after midnight. Had to drive 20 miles or so to a garage and spend £20 on a 1L bottle of oil. Checked the manual then and if it's red oil pressure you stop instantly, if it's yellow oil level drive until you can sort it out.

  • VX220 is cheaper ;)

  • x/19

  • skoda 130R

  • Like your thinking, X1/9 is on the right track... 130r is the oil cap isnt it.

This is an alleged barn find, no idea if it is true or not but this photo got me. Will post up more photos in 12hrs.

  • AC weighs lots ;)

Check the chassis as quite a few have had drivers that ran out of talent mid corner. The Lotus K series can have the same K series issues such as the porous head casting but the different position of the thermostat means less overheating issues. Also the cars are better looked after so the vvc engine makes 150bhp over the mgf 120bhp. Later MGF made more but meh to that.

Oh and drive one and see if you and the other half fit in one with comfort.

  • They're not supposed to be comfortable.

  • Speaking of running out of talent. I had a massive spin through the Craner curves on Monday. I nearly went 720 degrees round in the pissing rain.

  • And faster than the VX turbo.

  • I think it's a comment on leaving the spoiler extended whilst parked.

  • That seems reasonable.

  • Alleged Italian barn find

  • Asterion is quite understated for a Lambo.

Still in love with F Type at the moment.
