^ sound recomendations there imo
3 series touring were a bit small for us and 5 series to pricey (we have 2 greyhounds and a 9 month old to cart around)
So went for a Subaru Legacy Spec B - but they are probably worse on fuel than your S3.....

When the rev needle spends more time above 4000 than below.
I'm guessing spec is not so much.

That's if you're deadset on getting away from VW, if not, you can't go wrong with Passats. They run and run.

20% fuel efficiency and 50% improvement on emissions is epic. Also 30% up on torque and power. And this is still only of version 5 of the actuators...

Well I Currently have a 2000 Audi S3 with an overbored 1.9 20V and a TD05 20g big turbo with supporting modifications, getting it on the rollers to sort a custom map in the next couple of weeks, hoping for 400+
Most things will be better on fuel than that!
So up for sale it goes as its too tempting to boot it and the Fiancee is pregnant so cant be messing about with stupid HP cars and a little one in the back.
Not keen on the aesthetics of the C5, the A4 is a good shout, really like the look of the B6 Passat.
Anyone had any experience of BMW's or Merc's?
I'd look for a good Merc W124 estate. Pre-Chrysler quality, and wonderful looks.

Mk4 Anniversary in Tornado red is on the cards for later in the year I think.
Will obviously have to get a mk2 16v in the same colour for weekends!

full disclosure: I have searched Ovlov on craigslist...if only becuase the missus would not appreciate a v10 ram pickup. Californians do not embrace the tourings - most disappointing!

Yeah, the chap (Scandi fellow) makes the engines from scratch- casts the block, machines it etc.
He assembled a load of "cylinders" (trinders?) for the photo.

The 5k region is a bit dangerous for Mercs. The build quality drooped for a while.
Bimmers should be good. E46 touring, can't go wrong. 330d will be better economy than your S3 but still good at munching miles.
