i know and the thought of a mass switch of of speed cameras accross the country is not a happy thought.
Since their implementation road deaths have fallen significantly... Worrying indeed

Why would they publicise this? Retain the deterrent and have no costs.
Dipshits.

i suspect it is considered a positive act by politicos, a vote winner in oxfordshire, satisfying the car driving masses fear of persecution and demonstrating the condems commitment to the shrinking of the nanny state
or just dipshits

It's because the new government have removed central funding for speed cameras. Twats.

Why do they need funding? I'd have thought they'd be a good revenue raiser?

Apparently they do their job so well, they don't raise enough money.

I thought speed driver fines go to funding cycle lanes and bikes for africa

I read they cost about £110 million and raise £80 million, however to gain the same level of enforcement would cost much more in police time. Of course people just slow down and speed up again but at least they slow down for a bit and hopefully in the "most dangerous areas".
A point of view here.

Economising the benefits of such measures is usually a bad idea (you can't really put a cost on death), but if you go down that route a death is currently assumed to 'cost' about £1.6m (and serious injuries also 'cost' a bomb). By this sort of measure, they help avoid massive costs, but people are generally not too good at understanding indirect calculations like this.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/12/record-speeding-fine-switzerland
A Swedish man has been handed what is believed to be the world's largest speeding fine, which is expected to cost him £650,000.
hah!
A new generation of radar machines finally clocked him travelling at close to 186mph.
Giving police a watertight explanation as to why he was travelling so fast, he said: "I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty."douche...

I quite like this as well - "tips on extending a warm welcome to overseas visitors in the run up to the 2012 Olympics". [Enjoy in it's entirety]
When in a social situation with a South African do not place your thumb between your forefinger and your second finger – it is an obscene gesture.
When meeting Mexicans it is best not to discuss poverty, illegal aliens, earthquakes or their 1845-6 war with America.
Never call a Canadian an American.
Never imply Poles drink excessively.
