  • "understand" unfortunately implies sympathy.

Not in my world? It means to step back and comprehend something in its entirety (or as much of the entirety as you can).

  • Ride from Holborn to Ladbroke Grove saw nothing out of the ordinary, other than an increased police presence on foot at home and me coming as near as I've ever been to being wiped out by a vehicle - a cop car.

Made a left onto the Marylebone Road and within a seconds a squad car is bearing down on us. I have nowhere to go other than the lane I'd just joined, panic a bit and pull as far over to the left as I can as it was clear he wasn't stopping, fail to unclip so topple to my left and lean against the railings. I think I shut my eyes*. He roared past, hardly any loss of acceleration, sparing me all of 2 inches. It was terrifying. Cue gasps from onlookers. He was driving like a lunatic.

    *I definitely shit my pants.

  • Anyone cycled back through Peckham or New Cross this evening? Any worse than yesterday?

Seems to be quiet on the streets, just feels like the calm before the storm. Shops are boarding up, people are queuing to get in supermarkets, but don't seem to be too much rioting.

So were all those stories of riots <<<<<<< not true then?
    Twitter fail?

  • Possibly, coming back through Chiswick there were several groups of police, each group around 5 or 6 strong.

I suspect that they just asked all of the guys to do their paperwork outside today, just to make sure there is a "visible police presence". It is Chiswick afterall, someone might go after the bamboo Calfee in the Eco shop.

So it's not about quality, it's just quantity, right? Let's step back, back and back as the rioters approach. As long as we have enough boys and girls in blue on sight then we have done our homework. We will deal with the rest tomorrow morning.

    Hope so.
Yesterday it was mayhem trying to get home.

  • If this happened in China, these kids would probably all have been shot dead or taken to prison and never see they day of light again.

Whats your point - you feel that China has a better way of dealing with social unrest than Britain does?

  • Out on a limb prediction-
Increase of police puts rioters off.
They return when police presence is reduced.

  • So eloquent, Bill. You're wasted on the smelly couriers ;)

This is key: I don't think it's helpful to present the case as either condemn or understand. You can both condemn the actions, and try to understand the circumstances that lead to the actions.

Well then we agree. Maybe I'm too heavy on the condemnation and you're too heavy on the understanding right now. I dunno. I'm just worried about people. I don't feel aggressive about it. I'm just really sad.

  • Friend on FB just posted this about 50 mins ago.

"Avoid London Fields. Especially on your bike. Friends are being mugged violently. REPOST."

That sentence has been going around since last night on Twitter.

  • 2 shot guns, but only one firing hole? Bit shortsighted that.

Continuous fire from the second whilst the other is reloaded.

  • BBC news just announced the gun found on thursday hadn't been fired during the incident, surely a bit inflammatory??

  • Are the 16000 police officers going to stand on the streets like lemons again? And eventually surrounded because they get outnumbered?

No, I think the cops will all be smarting because they have been publicly humiliated over the last 3 days. They have been heavily out-numbered, 100+ to 1 from the footage that I have seen, but if they can get anything like the right numbers (I would guess 1 police vs 10 looters, although maybe someone who has actual experience & training would have a better idea) they will be looking to go in hard & fast. They clearly have a mandate from the public & politicians to do whatever is neccessary, using reasonable force, so they will.

Don't underestimate the pride of the Met.

  • Not in my world? It means to step back and comprehend something in its entirety (or as much of the entirety as you can).

yeah, well likewise, but if you say you "need to understand the rioters", there is often a reaction much like "you're being soft/sympathising".

I think the issue lies in priority, people don't want to hear that they should be trying to consider what is obviously quite a deep seated and complicated issue, while they are still under attack. They dont want to analyse the previous situation while they are still struggling with the current one. Which to some extent I can understand.

  • ^^^i'm sure they said there was no evidence so far to suggest it. more info coming right now. guy did have a gun it seems

  • I will be behind locked doors and windows again this evening. If they are breached I just remembered i have this...

What?! Did you used to be a mad axeman?

  • If this happened in China, these kids would probably all have been shot dead or taken to prison and never see they day of light again.

    oh god

What if he was reaching for it to shoot first? The cops are supposed to let them get a shot off first to be "fair?" I don't know the details, but the lack of a fired round from the victim's gun should not be used to draw any inferences.

So many press leaks now. Who's running the forensics for the cops? Those uber press friendly muppets at the Tour de France drug testing lab?

Either way - the cops need to to learn from the perps: get your story fucking story straight.

  • oh god

Actually, I am just guessing, I don't even come from China. But I can imagine that, no freedom of speech in China, innit.

  • I wouldn't be too worried about the Met pride being the biggest antagonist tonight. They've got some hard boys fresh from a mass raid on a travellers site in for the forseeable future, and they are up for it.

Just noticed I used "hard boys" and "up for it" in a sentence.

They reported (I think?!) that they found the gun still stuffed in a sock. But don't quote me on that. I'm like the police... not quite sure what went down.
