  • don't talk enough about those who might have been partially tricked

Do you mean as opposed to normally talking about the economic systems that make it worthwhile borrow the money for your travel fees?

  • that make it worthwhile

Well, that's kind of my point. I am not sure it is worthwhile. The channel four news report on one of the Essex lorry death victims go a long way to show that the victim had been given wildly unrealistic ideas as to how much she could earn after being smuggled into the UK.

  • They said they had their telephones removed, were separated from each other, and were driven to a military base individually in the backs of vans each one guarded by three or four men. Each of them had their wrists tied to their waists with Velcro restraints.

At the base they said they were left for hours without information on what was happening to them. When he was eventually escorted to the plane, one of the detainees said he panicked and cried out.

“I couldn’t control myself,” the man said.

Describing the scene in the plane, he said a Vietnamese man, among the deportees was biting his tongue [to stop himself from shouting out] and another Iranian man was crying. He added that when officials eventually came to inform him that he would not be sent that day, he cried too.

Before the flight was aborted, the manifest included three Iranians, two Iraqis, a Vietnamese man and an Albanian. But some refugee organisations are perplexed by the disproportionate number of Sudanese who are among the other 130 asylum seekers slated for removal to Rwanda — around a third according to Care4Calais, one of the charities challenging the policy through the courts.

The Home Office declined to explain.

Another Sudanese refugee among the group held at Colnbrook said he was 17 — a minor — and had been given no support since being sent there 10 days ago. He fled Sudan after being jailed and mistreated at the age of 13 in West Kordofan province. He then spent two years as a slave to militias in Libya, before escaping, braving the Mediterranean in a rickety boat, and crossing the Alps by foot.

“I don’t understand what is happening. I just wanted a safe place,” he said.

  • create the illusion of being busy

    70% of all jobs :)

  • Horrific.

And, while knowing that it’s not exactly representative, clear support for this approach from some members of the Question Time audience this week

  • Interesting article, thanks for posting.

I must admit that I was ignorant to the fact that the ECHR has nothing to do with the EU. I think that is probably pretty common and almost certainly suits Johnson's strategy of the EU being evil.

  • This weeks question time Crowd was extra specially gammonie. I was half expecting a ‘brexit means brexit’ moment.

  • Scathingly brilliant.

I could have only been better if they'd put 'it seems the only thing Mr Johnson doesn't pull out of is his mistresses'

  • as a “first-class policy,” but, as with anything agreed to by Johnson’s government, it’s usually worth checking the small print.

    This made me smile

  • Had to give up after about 20 minutes, the no mark lickspittle Tory was already boiling my piss then the bigot in the audience talking about all the foreign rapists coming over in boats finished me off

  • Lol, I must be fairly used to the QT audience, thought they were a fairly average audience. They aren't views I like but they aren't uncommon views. I think what annoyed me more were the people attacking the Labour MP constantly for not having any solutions in response to every time she presented a solution. If you listened to the people in TV panels and on social media, it would be easy to believe swing voters don't exist,

  • I am not sure it is worthwhile.

I used to have similar feelings, but the truth is I have zero idea of how it stacks up.

Eg what is the discounted indentured labour rate vs student loan interest? What is the mean time frame for the work?

I'm obv not trying to say human trafficking is some sort of awesome social good, but I can well imagine there is a huge variation in how that whole sub-economy works. Inevitably you're only going to hear the sensational stories.

  • I wonder if a lot of them are not under some kind of slavery contract that they have to enter the UK to work off the debts for their traffickers.

Which could easily be solved by providing safe routes and remove the opportunity for that type of exploitation

  • Maybe I was feeling more testy than usual but it did seem especially tedious this week with the rabid stuff and false equivalence

  • Guess it was just more focussing on an issue that brings out the worst in people, they hide it better other weeks as the topics are more palatable

  • Could be but if people are prepared to say this so publicly, imagine what they say in private

  • One in four UK prisoners has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, says report
    https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jun/18/uk-prisoners-attention-deficit-disorder-adhd-prison

Quite sad as no doubt many of them landing up in prison could of been prevented with earlier diagnosis and treatment/support and given current levels of funding for such things the findings will be filed away on a dusty shelf somewhere

  • The impression I get is that these lovely people have always thought like this in private. The Brexit vote gave them the feeling that it is somehow socially acceptable to be a racist xenophobe, so they have felt emboldened and now say what they really think in public.

  • Yep, feel like they finally have permission to push back against political correctness gone mad.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see “Are you thinking what we're thinking?" revived

  • I would be careful with the "easily"

Revealed: Migrant care workers in Britain charged thousands in illegal recruitment fees
Exclusive: new visa scheme to attract staff to ease the chronic shortages in the sector has left many open to exploitation

  • Yep, feel like they finally have permission to push back against political correctness gone mad.

These days, you get arrested and thrown in jail if you say you're English don't you.

  • The woke elites have taken over, I’m getting cancelled several times a day

  • Getting warm in France apparently Biarritz just broke its all time high by over 2°C and 20C over monthly average

Also a great example of how not to colour code a chart
