Introducing the time limits, Wallace said: “For decades the men and women of our armed forces have been faced with the prospect of repeated investigations by inquest and police, despite the vast majority having acted in accordance with the rule of law and often at great personal risk.
Acted in accordance with the rule of law and yet still requiring a legal amnesty???

Surely people in uniforms representing their Country should be held accountable to a higher standard, and with no time limitations.
-
• #60004
By the same principle, the politicians who make the law should also be held to a higher standard and they sure as hell don't want to be! So why would they look to apply that at all?

Half my family were cops in NI, and friends joined the army. Yes, they had dangerous, difficult jobs (my brother and uncle both had to leave their homes immediately as the IRA had found out their addresses), but they were open - and boastful - about the fact that they were corrupt, dishonest and brutal. I recall their outrage when bodycams were brought in as it hindered the delivery of beatings. Floating the idea that the law should apply to them too was seen as being on the side of the terrorists.

I have not lived through it myself, a mate of mine said the RUC was hated, yes they beat up mostly nationalists but also beat up unionists. There were people in there that just were in it for the powertrip.
He said they all got training at school on what to say and who to call when you got lifted because detention without trial was of course great for those that loved the power abuse.
It is a very complex issue and some people think there is so little chance of prosecution it is maybe better to leave it.
But then at least establish a truth finding commission where people can at least give the truth anonymously . For some people just know what really happened can give them peace. Instead records are sealed until everyone that has been wronged is dead... (and again some people WANT prosecutions so nothing was ever agreed upon before Stormont fell)
Just cutting funding cos "our poor law enforcement" that I believe also had a horrible attitude over in England (miner strikes etc. etc) in the 70s, well no. Feels like they are just pushing this through while Stormont is super busy. Again, there are no easy answers, but this I think is just a wrong one.
Did your family ever change their attitude over time?

No idea - haven't spoken to any of the cunts in about 15 years. Norn Irish don't do reconciliation.

Out of interest, how old is your friend?

Their activism led to the introduction of a series of landmark regulations from the New York City Council and Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) in August 2018: a cap on the number of ride-hail vehicles, along with a pay floor that promised to drastically improve driver pay.
Almost immediately, ride-hail apps tried and failed to challenge these regulations in court. Over the past nine months, however, they have successfully undercut these rules with a new tiered quota system for drivers. In an attempt to avoid having drivers collecting wages while being underutilized by riders, Uber and Lyft have restricted the number of drivers who can log on at any given time, with preference given to drivers who drive the most.
Ever since these changes were first introduced, Tariq has been sleeping in his car to meet the quotas. It’s not that he’s homeless. Because he has fallen below the top tier of drivers, he tries to be in his car constantly, even if he’s not being paid, so that if he’s suddenly allowed to log on, he can take advantage and have a better chance of moving up the tier system.
“No matter how hard I work, it’s never enough. Every day is about how to get online so I can hit the quota and not be locked out,” Tariq told Motherboard. “Where do I spend hours parked in the day? Where do I spend hours parked at night? When do I use the bathroom? When do I eat? If I hit the quota, I can relax. I can drive whenever I want. If I don’t hit the quota, I get locked out.”

Trump still in total denial about the seriousness of it all. Never has it been more obvious he is a clear and present danger to the people of the USA and the rest of the world.

To be fair, and in the appreciation that Trump is a fool, the guy that died drank a product for cleaning aquariums that had the ingredient 'chloroquine' in it-not the very commonly prescribed FDA approved anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine.
Darwinism, in other words.

I wish the Guardian wouldn't publish stuff like this - it's just the mirror image of all the shit that gets published in the Sun / Mail etc. I'm getting to a point where I feel the Guardian is just as 'dirty' in its twisting of reporting as they are, for the clicks and the eyeballs.
-
• #60017
The guardian goes click bait for sure but usually the truth is in the article. The DM not so much.

• #60018
Forgive my ignorance, but in what way is the Grauniad article twisting the facts?
-
• #60019
well, loathe as I am to defend the man, I'm pretty sure his remarks to the press didn't say "go drink aquarium cleaner and cure yourself of coronavirus" which is the impression that the Graun article gives. Hydroxychloroquine is also being used by the South Koreans as well as the French to apparently good effect-it's not pie in the sky otherwords, even if announced by the obese orange oracle.

Don't know why Trump isn't raging on twitter about this, they are going to kill (thankfully) fracking in the US and drive up unemployment when he needs it least ahead of the election, last time there was a major drop in oil price lots of US oil businesses quickly had to shut down and mothball or went bust

Last week he announced that they (the US) were going to buy huge amounts of oil to further build up their reserve. So I guess the lower price is, for now, a good thing.
And also dropping putting much time/money into historical crimes in NI...
...with no mention of a truth commission either. Arseholes.
