Being banned from driving is not fun... I once won enough points (2 x Gatso's and 1 x police stop for doing >100mph on M6) to win a 6 month holiday from Her Majesty's Highways and that's when you find out how shitty and expensive and inconvenient national public transport is. Although you get a clean license after three years insurance premiums lingers longer (naturally) for 5...
BTW I'm not saying bans for 18 months is sufficient punishment for killing cyclists... I'm just saying they are worse than you might think if you've never had one. Sometimes you can lose your job over it.

Well, that guy or girl bleeding out on the road because of the driver's idiocy is really going to give two shits about your vehicular limitations or your job status.
If someone killed me due to negligent driving, etc. I'd want them dead, preferably tortured first.

Driving is a privelige, allbeit one that we are pretty used to having. If peopel are massivly inconvenienced by the fact that they get a lifetime ban then surely that's the point. I'm sure the people you could have hit when you were going 100mph were really sorry that you were slightly inconvenienced and had to take public transport for a while....

I've not read all the case, so forgive the intrusion, but the baby is the innocent party in all of this. The likelihood of that child* achieving anything resembling a normal life after being born in prison is not high. Besides, women are habitually jailed more than men for equal or comparable offenses (go and look at shoplifting offenses for example). Breaking up families that way leads to more disadvantage and more crime.
- not forgetting the children of the deceased for one minute.
Dunno. Lush and his family seem pretty innocent to me. By the time she gets out on good behaviour Kelly's baby will have lived a couple of months with his her father, and won;t know the diference. Never heard any cases of babies born in prison being tattooed with "BAD APPLE" on the foreheads. I'm struggling to see that the baby suffers at all.
The more I read, the more infuriated I became. She didn't see him?? Did her car not come with a big fcuk off window in the front, for her to look out of? I find it hard to see why the judge didn't require her to explain:
- why she didn't use the windscreen,
- why her car was wobbling all over the shop,
- what the hell she was doing to cause the car to flip over
- why she thought "an animal" was riding a bike
- whether anyone had suggested to her that Lush was a human being and not an animal
- how she had the presence of mind to hitch away from the scene when she was too shaken to stop and make sure the guy was alright
- why she only surrendered to police after she'd had a chance to let her blood alcohol level go down
Just a few things I'd have been curious about when sentencing.
- not forgetting the children of the deceased for one minute.
