Oh noes, Bike Shack in Leyton has been emptied.
Will most business insurance cover acts of civil unrest? It's a standard clause not to AFAIK. Hate to see so many businesses go under as a result.

Don't worry H, rumours are the mob will be passing through Stratford about 7.30 tonight. They'll be knocking over Sainsbury's ... much higher grade of foodstuffs
When are they coming through Highate and Finchley?
I got my eye on something -

I remember Toxteth after the Liverpool riots and the devastation that was still in evidence many years later. It served a perfect reminder of how bad things actually were in that area, however the issues that affected the people of Liverpool (not just Toxteth) are miles away from the reasoning behind breaking and entering a Jewellers in Enfield for bling and then fighting with the police when they broke the looting up. That is not a riot with any underlying reasons, it is simply theft by cunts. Yes, cunts. Tottenham was, and possibly will be the only place so far where there is a vague passing resemblance to what happened in Liverpool, Brixton, Handsworth, Moss Side etc. in 1981 where the looting was secondary to a protest using significant violence against the Police.

My gut reaction to what your saying is that you sound like a liberal apologist. This is not a political protest, it's bandwagon thievery. Correct me if I'm wrong.
You're right, that there's obviously some extremely maladjusted morals at play, but adults are able to make choices about basic rights and wrongs. For me, anyone who intentionally steals or causes harm to others and their property forfeits their right to be taken seriously as a citizen.
I'm all for addressing the misfortunes or socio-political situations that cause this, but these are broad, long-term issues. Setting fire to public transport and looting an indepedent business is not a reasonable or even a coherent response. We can all stroke our beards (not aimed at you personally, Horatio! I just remembered you have a beard) and say "yes, but what causes this greed?" or "why do these people think it's ok to do this?", but there will be people far worse off, who have been fucked over by the government to a much greater extent, who still have a level of dignity and respect for themselves and others not to act like complete, fucking, cunts.
So you believe that there's such a thing as an intrinsic wrong?

That occured to me last night, I seem to remember civil unrest being put down to "acts of god" by insurers and as such are not covered.
This shit makes me angry
go ahead and burn down Barclays, they're cunts that don't pay tax. But burning down someone's home is just not on. Whoever did it should be tied to a chair and have their own home set on fire and see if they can escape. -

Shall we all have a cup of tea and a cuddle?
Hmm, I could really do with a cuddle :-(
I can't believe how selfish you must have to be to set fire to a bus. Most of all I feel bad that some people are obviously getting a pretty shit education and must not have any real prospects if this seems a worthwhile way of having fun.

Na, all 'bout the social contract innit.
EDIT: Actually scrap that, I found one: http://de.acidcow.com/pics/20110804/this_is_what_an_awkward_situation_looks_like_01.jpg

I had a trainee recently who told me her Brooks saddle had been nicked so she went to Brick Lane and bought another one; which she knew perfectly well had been stolen. A nice, educated, middle class young woman. Happy to support crime and using some warped logic to justify it.
On a less erudite and more violent level isn't that what has been happening the last two days? -

I'm just going to post this once more and leave this thread to the other kind of mob: The opinions/options being expressed by many people here seem to verge from crude and dismissive to disgusting. All I wanted to do was offer some sort of counter balance to that. I'll take my thoughts elsewhere (like my work maybe).

Was on the tube, on my way to a meeting, earlier when three old ladies were struggling to to work out how to get to Bayswater.
Me - You can't go on the circle / district as it's closed at the moment..
Them - Is that because of all the riots?
Me - Erm, not really. I think it's engineering works^ cool story bro etc

You can only assume that people become so stressed/hysterical (delete or add as appropriate) in a situation like this that they lose all faculty of reason.

There was I recall a fair amount of looting in Moss Side in 1981, though not as much as has been apparent in Tottenham. This was mainly due to there being fuck all of note in the way of shops in the area then. It's exactly the same pattern, a protest by some against perceived injustice from the police, escalates and other less savoury elements join in. Shocking really, people wanting something for nothing, who do they think they are MPs ?

Your so on the money, I just thought I'd edit it down so it can be cut'n pasted throughout the discussion.

Guy being interviewed on the BBC just now who's head of a school board of governers in Tottenham and also a loss adjuster says that it hasn't been declared a riot so businesses should be covered by their regular insurance policies.
If it's declared a riot, he says the government picks up the tab for uninsured losses.

On the subject of 'liberal apologism' and whatnot, I'm pretty certain that riots are to a large extent a mirroring of what each respective Government does. On this topic I quote the excellent Mr lush:
That is not a riot with any underlying reasons, it is simply theft by cunts.
Or, to psychologise it:

Tottenham pales into insignificance when you look at the skullduggery there

Hope it goes through their regular insurance then - can you imagine how long it would take to get the money out of the government? They'd be out of business before that happened.
Terribly depressing Tottenham high street now. Smells burnt and people are wandering around looking so sad, some angry.
