  • Hey I've got a brilliant idea, how about not judging people on how they look?

  • ^Wise advice it is so much easier to get lucky if you go ugly early look for the beauty within

  • In all probability the media will have ripped that photo from social media, it's what they usually do.

  • ^Yep, it's probably the most recent picture of her that's available.

  • Hey I've got a brilliant idea, how about not judging people on how they look?

Expressions aren't the same as looks.

In all probability the media will have ripped that photo from social media, it's what they usually do.

If so, Grauniad I am disappoint.

  • just... stop.

  • I'm afraid I really don't know what you were thinking with that comment, Emyr.

  • I'm afraid I really don't know what you were thinking with that comment, Emyr.

Were they still able to pose for photos, I doubt they would have posed like that if they knew the image would go beyond their own circle of friends and be reproduced by a national newspaper.

Could they not have chosen something a little more dignified, like their most recent school mugshots?

There are plenty of photos of me on social media looking like a drunk twat. There are also a few of me looking like a respectable young adult. Should an untimely death befall me, I hope one of the latter will be selected.

    just... stop.

    Disappointed you nerged so soon?

  • I'm afraid I really don't know what you were thinking with that comment, Emyr.

I think I do, can't put it in words precisely so you're probably going to internet bum me with flames and vinegar for afters but I have a feeling it was something to do with how we as a society are so used to dumbed down image based news that we have now began to judge whether we intend to read an article based solely on the imagery used to introduce the article. Emyr's comment came across as ugly bint meh, when I think it was intended as a critique of the flippant imagery attached to what is a serious and tragic story.

That only makes me think 'so what?'

To me, that they *didn't even have an 'appropriate' photo *makes it all the more touching, if that's possible.

As I said, I wonder if there's more to this case than what has so far been reported, and I think we should stick to the same general procedure when commenting on this as we do in 'Rider Down' threads. Try to think of what the family or friends might think should they find this thread in search results. Obviously, they weren't riding bikes when they were mown down, but LFGSS might still show up high enough in search results.

I certainly didn't expect that posting this item would generate this sort of discussion.

  • i'm not buying it at all. he made what he thought was a throwaway remark on a public forum and has rightly been called on it. instead of throwing his hands in the air and saying 'fuck me that was a bit off - let me delete that' he's dug his heels in and is attempting to dress his ghoulish insensitivity regarding the senseless murder of two innocent children up as some sort of social commentary. fuck that and fuck him (or indeed her).

  • The content of the article? I didn't get that far. I can't put up with duckface on my screen.

    I mean the headline.

I didn't take your comment as some sort of morally repugnant crap, just confusing. I may have had negative thoughts about the pic if the headline/article was about something more trivial. Like how teenages doing duck faces look stupid. but it wasn't so the picture became of no consequence to me. Just a sad story.

  • fuck that and fuck him (or indeed her).

    Either, if you pay me.

Call it a quick fire response to a moment of severe cognitive dissonance.

I still don't think ducklips are appropriate in serious media.

  • Emyr, this isn't a matter that you can take lightly, even I know the line between humorous and just plain inappropriate.

  • what else would you have in your style guide?

I'd ban the peace sign, double gunning, and that thing where the leggy model sticks one leg out of their dress.

  • Pictures of sports men and women doing sex faces whilst playing sport are good tho.

  • That's just it though dst, stick up the image of the model and people will start to read the most banal story on the most turgid of subjects. They'd be on the second page of an essay on quantative easing before they realised that they had been duped.

  • That's how I learnt all that shit.

I understand your point Ramaye, I'm not sure it's the same as Emyr's.

  • Me neither, still a good chance that Emyr went straight from being flippant to grabbing a spade to dig themself a deeper hole. Of course everyone else standing at the top pissing in is only increasing the spade work and not helping us to move on to other topics.

  • It is, but the other way round.

Read post, prepare for depressing news story, click link, see duckface => close tab, re-read post and WTF??

It's not like TV news where you get a serious-faced presenter with a sombre tone, my eyes hit the image before the headline, whatever link I click.

What other topics? Do you mean the important issues of the day, such as this.

  • She doesn't seem happy about their decision.

  • Don't get me started on Tesco express, I'm all for getting shouty at them. They open a convinience store in a smart neighbouhood and fill it with tat, did you know that the one in Highgate does not sell English butter!!!!eh!!! I have had a full on basket down flounce because of this. I have also flounced on the lack of english bacon before although they seem to have come round on this one. I now have to be desperate to go there as given the choice I will slum it down to archway for the co-op and home grown produce.

  • ^^^ petit pois

  • Is that you two trying to make up, you know, to give peas a chance.
