It looks more to me like large multinationals with the healthiest bank balance that are based or originated in that state. But I don't recognise a lot of those brands so could well be wrong.

Quick google leads me to believe they're popular brands strated in/HQ'd from those states. Which makes more sense.

FFS - Even in the 80s rush to privatise, covenants were set in place that low margin areas had to be serviced bu the newly privatised industries - Post offices in the Orkneys and telephone lines in the Channel Islands and the like.
