It was about £26k when I was in the process of joining (2008/9 - didn't go through - even though I passed everything - MET is fucked) and the overtime is/was great if you could deal with it.
It used to be you applied, passed, spent several month's training at full pay which also counted towards your probation which lasted two years then there were millions of career paths.
The offer I got after I passed all the assessments, when they were fucking around with recruitment, was continue to be a Special for 18 months (voluntary but EXACTLY the same powers and responsibilities as a regular) and complete a competency checklist which requires A LOT of unpaid work, probably about 20 hours a week. Then PAY to take a conversion desk based course which, if you passed, would put you straight in as a regular probationer. So instead it went from getting about £15k to train to working for free then paying at the end for the privilege. My resignation letter from the specials was pretty much - I'm not willing/can't afford to do something for free that you have rigorously assessed and passed me to be able to be paid for.

Does this just pave the way for eventual private police force?
Or changes to the contract so Police can finally be made redundant.
.....and so it begins...

Who will kettle the police when they start demonstrating?
If only they could strike, ha!

that silly cow who just won the court case about wearing her cross at work,
why can't she just wear it inside her jumper
or does she feel the need to force her personal beliefs on everyone she comes into contact with ? -
• #19081
Wasn't that old news? didn't they do similar years ago?
-
• #19082
ah yes, 2006 as mentioned in the article.
dicki, she apparently refused to;
Mrs Eweida, a British Airways employee, from Twickenham, south-west London, received widespread publicity when she was sent home in 2006 after refusing to remove a necklace with a cross or hide it from view.

It makes me cross.
Surely, there's no need to crucify her.
For christ's sake. -

Say it isn't so...

Why not let her wear it though. What kind of intolerant people are threatened by a small cross. It's not like she was handing out communion whilst at the check-in desk.

The police thing seems quite bad, although 19k ain't London pay, it's a drop from 22k. Also they can still start on 22k if the force wants to and they have previous (the good kind like PCSO) and can progress more quickly apparently. I don't think anywhere is really hiring coppers anyway so I doubt it'll make too much difference. Gives me something to talk about when they bollock me on Thursday for going places I shouldn't go.

Exactly. In what way is she 'forcing her personal beliefs on' anyone by wearing a cross?

Maybe this will make Balki come back to the UK.

I’m all for people wearing what they want but sometimes it can be awkward. Eg. a friend of mine went to the doctors about sex stuff but the doctor was wearing a crucifix necklace and my friend felt like she might be being judged as she wasn’t/isn’t married...

My ex suffered a lot of health problems... She went to the surgery one day and the locum who saw her suggested that maybe the reason behind all her health issues was that she wasn't a christian and that God was punishing her... As you would imagine, she was in fucking bits...
I called the surgery immediately and had the wanker fired...

I know, but where do you draw the line and the intolerence comes the other way? I know it can be awkward but if the doctor isn't exhibting judgement and still doing their job as a professional regardless then only our assumptions about their prejudice are the issue.

Basically everyone should just convert to the church of Digital Underground and do what they like!
-
• #19099
Hmm, but doctors do exhibit judgements - like when I went to the doctors with a friend who was feeling very depressed, and the doctor assumed we were a lesbian couple and made some inappropriate comment about how that might have something to do with it.

TS, good on you for getting him fired, what a fucking prick.
Wow, IIRC coppers were on a £20k starting wage when I left school*...
