  • On the budget, in the face of every news agency reporting his decisions with headlines about robbing pensioners, George Osborne says on the BBC, "I am not in the business of writing the next days' headlines".

He then goes on to stress again and again the news that GlaxoSmithKline have come out and said the budget is fantastic and they're investing .5 billion in the UK on the back of it.

Riiiiiight, so they made that decision overnight, right? And not over the last few weeks in discussion with the toad, announcing on the day of the budget so that it will make the next day's papers.

"I am not in the business of writing the next day's headlines"

Lying Fucktard. That's exactly what you were trying to do.

  • BBC Breakfast were comically bad this morning. They "only had time" for one question from a viewer, which went something like

I earn around £35,000 and pay 40% tax. WTF are you doing cutting the 50p tax rate?

It was a freebie to Mr O - he just pointed out that as the guy was earning £35k he was actually in the 20% tax bracket and took the opportunity to crow about increasing the personal allowance.

I mean come on, was that really the most incisive question received by the BBC from viewers? I don't want to believe it, but it might be true.

  • Yeah, that was pretty shocking.

The main reason cited for cutting the 50p rate was that it was being so routinely circumvented that reducing it to 45p might reduce the incentive to dodge the tax and actually collect more in revenues.

I'm expecting Ken Clarke to stand up next to say that as rape conviction rates are rubbish they're going to make it legal.

  • Yep absolute load of balls - cut the tax rate, as an incentive for people who dodge to come forward.

  • Yeah, that was pretty shocking.

Being wealthy enough to be able to hire an accountant who can help you to avoid paying income tax is not a crime. Rape is, and always will be, a crime. Comparing the two is frankly ridiculous.

  • It's not much of a crime in some places and it should be, the tax avoidance should be as well. Not really the right kinds of things to compare though.

Not really - the arguments are the same: because people are getting away with something it is right that we should stop pursuing it.

  • 'Maybe if we stop chasing so many rapists a larger proportion will turn themselves in'? I don't think I understand the comparison.

  • It's been cut, in any case.

    Pandering cunt.

If you can't manage a holiday out of a £150k + per year salary, you're doing it wrong, and should probably kill yourself.

Yeah WTF are they spending it on? I am nowhere near the 50p rate yet manage to do two hols a year (albeit frugal ones).

Absurd. Tax avoidance is not a crime; tax evasion is.

Just to show how ridiculous this line of argument, try this one for size:

Making the sale & consumption of alcohol illegal was a mistake because it led to the wide-spread flouting of the law.

  • Not really - the arguments are the same: because people are getting away with something it is right that we should stop pursuing it.

The arguments are in no way the same, the inland revenue cannot pursue people who commit tax avoidance as it is legal, the only barrier to it is you have to be able to pay enough money to a good accountant who can find the legal loopholes for you. Most people who pay tax would not actually save money by doing this so it is only worthwhile for the very wealthy. If however you use illegal means to avoid paying tax on your income you will be pursued by the authorities as you will be committing fraud and to be honest they are pretty good about catching these people. The moral debate about tax avoidance is a different matter altogether.

Sexual assault, is a crime, in this country will always be considered morally repugnant, and when it is reported will always be pursued by the authorities to the best of their ability. The clear up rate is poor for many reasons not least because conviction will often rely on a woman (most of the time) who has been violated in the worst possible way and deeply traumatised by her experience confronting the attacker in open court which is an act of bravery most people simply cannot comprehend.

You are comparing apples to cars. There is no comparison.

  • who cares, we all got his point.

  • who cares, we all got his point.

I care, it was a lazy argument, and the question of how to maximise the tax take is a lot more complex than is suggested making a cheap comparison between violent crime & avoidance of revenue payments.

  • Christ what a ridiculous bun fight

Garnett, you had no right to say that fiddling tax is worse than sexual assault, you horrid man.

FFS guys, it was just a flippant, comedic comparison, relating to a previous controversy surrounding Clarke, obviously. If you lack the wherewithal to deduce Garnett's intimation and discard its many flaws then you possibly aren't qualified to read the news thread :-)

Other forum users distracted from an important matter by a need to demonstrate their understanding on an entirely erroneous straw man.
