Bet this happens a lot.
This is fucking horrible behaviour, but it still has the thin sheen of an excuse that it goes on in a war zone. Not acceptable, but they are extraordinary circumstances.
The thing is, these are only the few who have been caught doing this - there's loads more who slip under the radar and return to civilian life... with a box of ears or fingers tucked away under the bed alongside the 'special pictures.'
I'd be interested to see the statistics on some of these veterans going 'postal'. Bet they are going pop all over the place.

It has happened in most conflicts, you may wish to read Niall Ferguson's book on the 1st world war.

Very true; in fact you could argue it probably happens less now because media coverage (and to an extent international law) have improved. When Russia talks of its liberation of Berlin it doesn't like to mention the way its troops raped their way across the city. Anyone who thinks Mai Lai was unique is living in a fantasy world. And so on and so on.

One of my best mates was a major in the army, and did 2 tours in Iraq and 2 in Afghanistan.
He has no shortage of horror stories about the behaviour of US troops out there. However he always says that the biggest problem, is that the US army in mainly composed of young kids, plucked out of the middle of nowhere, who are totally uneducated about the region, and are mentally not prepared for what they encounter on the ground. He also pointed out that the US military has a far more frat like ethos, with those considered weaker being hazed and forced into doing stuff, whereas the British military tended to be much better at looking out for soldiers with issues, offering a helping hand rather than bullying and shouting them into line.
Apparently there are serious issues with many of them loosing the plot and either self harming, or harming others.
There is no justification for any of these acts, and they make me sick to the stomach, but it makes you think that we are only at the start of the repercussions for whats going on out there, despite the combat phase coming to an end

Near misses in aviation are never really that though are they?
The Citation 525 jet was about 100ft to 200ft below and half-a-mile away
Best not let that stop a good story though! -

It doesn't take very long for one to cover that distance, though.

interesting to see the burning vs. burning across the world.
Can't all the religions just go to the desert and just wipe each other out?

That was a really good read.
I know this has been said 100's of times before but it really does make you feel lucky to have what you've got. These men are all heroes in my eyes. Do they know how long it will be until they are out of there?
