  • Comedy? What's the link between Red Dwarf and comedy?

    Best TV ever.
    Sense of Humour Fail.

  • The bettings odds for Hoy to win this weekends race are 8/11

    Hamilton's odds are 1/3

Would someone explain what that means.

It's cool that you can bet on anything in the UK.

  • I bet you only get comedy answers.

Mine is the first. I win!!

  • Excellent. This is the xmas fancy dress we're doing for a mates night I'm involved in.

  • It's quite simple:

    Hoy: bet 1 - win 1.73

    Hammilton: bet 1 - win 1.33

So Hammilton is slight Fav but both those odds are quite short which means the bookies are cagey and don't know how this will pan out. Not worth a punt.

    Hamilton's odds are 1/3

Would someone explain what that means...

8/11 means if you bet £8, you get £11 back. in decimal your £1 returns £1.375 for a hoy win and £3 for a hamilton win.

  • in decimal your £1 returns £1.375 for a hoy win

Unlike like what your tought in school, bookies always round down decimal points.

    Oooh eerr.

  • Thanks, makes more sense now.

So the bookies think Hamilton will win?

    Anyone going to this?

  • Unlike like what your tought in school, bookies always round down decimal points.

yeh i know. every penny counts!

have you got it the other way around (from what dmczone put up) or did you get your odds elsewhere?

@dmczone. yeh, cant believe that you can bet on anything in this country. no idea how they can place odds on weather, politics, tv shows, etc. dont think gambling is a big problem here tho

  • It means the bookies will make money

  • It means the bookies will make money

Don't need to look at the odds to come to that conclusion.

I worked for Paddy Powers for 2 years, they have a huge team that exist just to do research for the prices. Novelty bets such as big brother & x-factor make them huge money as people tend to bet with emotional investment and not by studying trends & insider information. With bets like snow on Christmas day (which is actually a big one) the prices start short and then vary as new met information comes in, this is being constantly monitored by the equivalent of a news room who constantly striving to be more informed then the punters at large.

With novelty betting the bookies have moved into a whole new demographic of punters, who would never before have set foot inside a bookies & this has been incredibly lucrative.

A bad gambler tries to beat the odds.

A good gambler knows the odds. ;)

  • Well i'll give you an in-depth anaylsis on sunday evening when I get back from watching it =D

  • Just the right tone of jingoistic baiting of those cheese eating surrender monkeys...

  • 8/11 means if you bet £8, you get £11 back. in decimal your £1 returns £1.375 for a hoy win and £3 for a hamilton win.

    No, it REALLY doesn't.

If you had an 8/11 winner with an £8 stake, would you be happy if the bookie handed you £11 when you went to collect? You'd have been shortchanged by £2.81.

    8/11 x £8 stake = £5.81 winnings
    Total returns = £5.81 + £8 stake = £13.81.

    I hope you don't gamble.

yeh, i immediately worked it out that my calcs were wrong. bah, dont get the 'fraction' method. i always switch to the 'decimal' odds on my williamhill account. so yes i do gamble. :(

not much of a regular gambler though. put in £20 a couple of years ago, havent topped it up yet, withdrawn about £200 in winnings and current balance is £150. either im very lucky or putting in 'very safe' bets. last big win was the delahoya-pacuiao boxing match! i was two round short of a £264 win.

Mostly right. As i posted earlier the returns on 8/11 is 1.73 so:

    on a 8 pound bet you get, 8 x 1.73 = 13.84

it's not always as direct as math in school, but 8/11 odds will always be 1.73 and never 1.727272... as a calculator would tell you.

I hope none of you gamble. truly a mugs game.

  • so who's actually gonna watch then? on in wee bit
