  • jesus tittyfucking, how many philosophers are there on this forum?

i've got an honours degree in philosophy and a science degree. when i finished i had no idea what the fuck to do, but i managed to work out what i was good at, got a couple of feet in the door and it seems to have worked out ok since then. it took a couple of years to get going, but you've got to start somewhere.

when i finished uni i had no idea that my current job existed. but the research and analytical skills i picked up from studying philosophy help a shitload. also employers can assume i'm not a moron who can't think.

    useless degree win.

Just goes to show: there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I knew Wigan was in a state, didn't realise it was in the United States.

  • I knew I should have put in the disclaimer; when I think of asses I always think of you Plats.

  • i have a bfa (bachelor of fine arts) in visual communication, which you'd think would be completely useless. but i've used it. i'm an art director now.

my minor was modern english literature. which, i guess, i use as well... i read books.

    I don't know, but I'm another one.

Unlike many tightly-structured degrees, a philosophy degree doesn't force you to do it right. It is perfectly possible to bum your way through one, but that's a huge opportunity missed. If you do it properly, it can give you a fantastic education. I'm sure that's generally the case for a wide range of degrees, but philosophy has something special in enabling you to question underlying assumptions, to understand the principles of thought, to defend yourself against intellectual pretentiousness, and to self-reflect, to give just a random selection of potential benefits.

Having said that, abuse of philosophy is often well-deserving as an object of ridicule and it can be quite hard to tell it from a serious preoccupation with the subject.

I think that post needed a colon rather than your semi.

  • A semi is all I can manage these days.

Does it have anything to teach you about brevity?

    Don't tell me - you're German.
I've always leaned more towards the philosophy of abuse.

  • Does it have anything to teach you about brevity?

    no.

  • no.

That was a bit short of you.

  • the best advice id ever give is turn up looking smart for the interview

i was the only kid in the room wearing a suit at one, i got the scholarship and had really average grades compared with the others :)

  • Does it have anything to teach you about brevity?

It can do, if that's what you want!

Most academic philosophy is extremely wordy, but there is also much philosophy that is very terse.

  • Don't tell me - you're German.

    I won't, then. ;)

  • Is it possible to prove that I* didn't* do a philosophy degree?

  • Is it possible to prove that I* didn't* do a philosophy degree?

    Up to a point.

  • A semi is all I can manage these days.

    That'll be your saddle.

Scientist have proved that.. fades into cycling and penile... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • I'm hoping you'll be my saddle one of these days.
