but let's not anything take away from the fact that bush has gone, and there's a black man in the white house.
it's worth celebrating.
yes very true.
he reminds me a bit of lewis hamilton.
weird thing is i don't perceive him as black, to me he just has skin a bit darker than a white person.
does that make me a bad person? -

The biggest thing about this is that it's symbolic...
True. Yes we can! He's a bit god squad in his rhetoric though eh?

• #58
come on, pep up! a politically radical black man has been elected by a huge mandate, with a democratic majority in both the senate and house of reps. yeah, it'll be a hard battle for him, but for this morning, let's celebrate.

As an ex-cabinet maker I can confirm that a veneer can quite easily have a coat of gloss. Bit wasted on a nice veneer, but still possible.
What that has to do with anything I don't know, but Mr. Wilderness' original sentiment was correct all along

In your face! Eh wilderness

So you're all saying there's no way you would varnish something you'd recently veneered? I find that hard to believe.
I also find it very hard to believe that Americuh will really ever 'change' in the confines of its system of governance. I look forward to being proven wrong... but don't hold your breath people. He's probably a 33rd degree mason/shapeshifting lizard who eats babies like all the other cunts.

I am amazed so many people turned out. Wasn't it less than 50% last time - now 75% - that's fantastic.
I wish we had someoned to galvanise the nation like that instead of Gordo and some bland blokes.(and someone with substance not just rhetoric / smarmy blair-schmooze).

Skully's metaphor was neither mixed nor poor. Quite good comparing democracy to a veneer.
So there!
I do look forward to seeing what Obama can do with the presidency, congress, and senate. I suspect we could see universal health care in the US within a year.

He's no Tim Collins though, is he?
Nope, but while Collin's speech was hailed by the press as great oration, his supposed target audience (the troops) found it depressing and morbid.
I think Collins had an eye on his post-army career while writing it.

Cannae take credit for it. But I love this record!

White America did vote in the majority for McCain/Palin according to the exit polls. Nationally the vote totals are pretty damn close 52% to 48% I think.

nothing much. he'll be as bad as the last one (well nearly) people will still be living in poverty, the U.S will still be fighting wars, the financial crisis will deepen, America will still choose to be ignorant of climate change.
i think your optimism is likely to wane.i'ts not sour grapes on my part, i wish i had good reason for a different prediction.
+1 no future!!!

yeah but the system works in this weird way so that most presidents don't have a majority of the vote. so 52% is actually a total mandate.
-
• #72
52% = total mandate!? Ha! So what's a slim majority then? 25%? Aint that fucked up!?

Skully's metaphor was neither mixed nor poor. Quite good comparing democracy to a veneer.
it wasn't mixed, it was just a bit wrong to talk about applying coats of gloss to a veneer, which, while of course possible, defeats the object of a veneer.

I think it's a fine metaphor. Veneeer as a thin lair covering something hidden underneath for aesthetic value. This faux-finish gets a bit tatty, so something needs to be done. Get out the polish and do the best you can with a bad material, as it's the easy fix.
