McChucks, Fraud and Starfucks.. are you kidding?
Honestly, has everybody's pisstake detector disappeared today?
In other shocking news, I wasn't seriously advocating shooting British soldiers as a noble end.

@badtmy: This is clearly the penalty of your failure to express your point clearly in the first place.
Do you still think it's a good thing that British soldiers are being killed?I made a throwaway comment expressing my pleasure at Obama's election. I didn't expect a diatribe on the history of US/British relations and the moral implications thereof! And to be honest I'm stunned that you took my obviously tongue-in-cheek response about killing British soldiers seriously.

Absolutely right. America produces a massively disproportionate amount of pollution. It is also a country to whose values many in the developing world aspire. They want to mimic the lifestyle of America. They want big polluting cars etc. America must take a lead or else we are all doomed.
Earlier this year I was taken to a baseball match in Phoenix. We were told that the roof of the stadium closed if it got too hot and so they could turn on the airconditioning and cool the 60,000 spectators. That is America's stand on pollution and the environment. That scares me.
They believe the real threat is the up and coming nations. They are insistent we limit China and India because they could tip the balance given their numbers. A reduction in US emissions would affect their economy and push work abroad. Subsidising import taxing petrol heads!
Sad thing is now young blaad is in charge he can’t cut the hand that feeds him because of the financial mess they are in. We are the same over here. Who ever steps into power next needs to make us feel good and distract us from the fact we are in a dire space. Fancy environment talk doesn’t pay the bills and the US debt is astronomical and so many long term weapons and military contracts are already in place.. it's time for more fancy patter.
But have to say his speech was great. Listening to it gave you the feeling you were part of history and you’d be hearing parts of that for years to come.

well if you say this:
"A noble aim, indeed.
The British have been getting Australian soldiers killed for almost as long."to me it sounds as if you have a grievance going back to gallipoli (or even further)
or is that just a "tongue-in-cheek" comment too? -

or is that just a "tongue-in-cheek" comment too?Yes. I mean, the statement is true. But I'm hardly holding a grudge about it, am I? I just wanted to point out that nations in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. What's wrong with pointing that out? Do I have a grievance about Gallipolli? I wish it hadn't happened, but there's not much point getting snarky about it now, is there?
Australians have screwed over our indigenous people and plenty of small Pacific island nations, before anyone wants to continue the regression.
There's not a hell of a lot of point blaming the people who voted in the US elections for the actions of distant past US administrations. Why not be happy that they've got a new and optimistic government?
And let's not forget, the three countries under discussion here are strong allies and have been for a very long time. We have more in common than separating us.
[edit] can i just point out that i didn't start this discussion about the moral equivalence of killing soldiers from different nations, it's a fucking stupid discussion, and i want no further part in it when we should be celebrating the death of the neo-con era instead of quibbling over who shot who in which country over the past 250 years [/]

nothing wrong with it at all.just about every country has a dubious past. from africans selling their own kind as slaves, the treatment of roma in europe the list is endless.

Was up most of the night with my eye on the polls. After listening and relistening to Obama's "This is our moment" acceptance speech I'm feeling genuinely hopeful that this new dawn of American leadership beckons an enlightened sense of global direction and ideology.
I just blogged on Obama, Shepard Fairey, Obama spoke cards and fixies for Obama at http://www.urbancyclechic.com. He made a great speech back in May in Portland OR about investing in bike infrastructure. I'm sure he'll deliver on this.
