Gees what was the temperature of that at the weekend !?? Im a wuss, bit chilly for me yet... plus my wetsuit is still a bit snug ! ( damn chocolate !)

It was cold! Snowy and I went, and I took the kids - they didn't thank me. Actually they had fun, but swimming was limited. The serious swimmers were in suits.
Still it was warmer than last year's mid-winter swim...

hi kattiep,
sorry it's membership of the various council run (aqua terra?) gyms in islington. can't remember how much the swimming one is i'm afraid. i didn't renew because i moved away so use other places more these days. it's worth it if you live there though.
i'm doing the 5k swimathon again this saturday.

Yeah kids dont care.... they just go blue and carry on !
I took my son a few years back into the Atlantic, on Sennen beach.... I still feel bad, I cheekily put my wetsuit on, and he had his little shorts on.... still he had a great time !
Oooo Dooks, me too ! I did it back in 2008, and thought I'd do it again this year, seeing as I had a baby and all last year !

I'm down sarf - Cheam pool, it's an old well of a pool, 30m. I hope they fill the water right up as it tends to get very choppy !
Are you having a rest this week ? I was going to just swim tomorrow, but i did something to my left neck/back area yesterday, and swam through it... and now its switched to my right side !?
Dont know whether to have 3 days off prior or 5 days ???

London Fields was heaving over the weekend - I guess the heated pool suits the soft North London types.
Brockwell Lido was bracing, but the usual swimmers were there - mostly as Mark says, suited up. Water was 12 degrees apparently.

rest? hmmm. seeing as i haven't really done any distance training at all this year i'm not really in a position to be resting...
i'll probably just do the usual 90 minutes of intervals at masters on thursday and leave it at that, then i've got friday off to recuperate and i'll do the swimathon on saturday afternoon. i'm not going for any records this year. the tri's are my main focus at the moment so i'm just aiming to get though it with the minimum pain. i have a feeling i'll be quicker in the 15m pool than the last three years in a 30m anyway. with a big kick off and streamline you get a third of every length free!

i need a wetsuit for these upcoming tris but am on a tight budget. any one got any preferences/recomendations/tips on wetsuit purchase/hire/borrow?

I swam 5 k last friday for the first time in my life, took me just under 90 minutes. I went up from 3.5 k at the start of the week, after which I was well tired. After the 5 k I felt good, but my nose hurt from the clip, and my shoulder from stubble rubbing!
I never thought of doing a swimming event though, perhaps I should now! -

Dooks - If you dont top 5.5ft and are a lady you can borrow my orca, it has some nice pink design bits on it too !
Ooo dont forget the body glide though - Chaffing is a BASTARD !
Unless you want people to think you have carpet burns on your neck ! -

adroit - Weldone ! Thats pretty quick ! Last time i did it in 1 hour 40 mins, I was hoping for a 1.30-something this time, but just have to see how it goes....

Unless you want people to think you have carpet burns on your neck !haha thanks nick nack. sadly, i'm a bit over 5'5" and despite what many will tell you, i am male.
i'd still like to borrow your orca though if that's alright?

adroit - that is good dude.
my first 5k was 1 hour 18. last 2 have just overed the wrong side of 1 hour 20. if i'm honest i'm hoping to get back under 80mins this time.

1hour.18 !! My feet are way too small !!
There is no way I could sustain 24 min 1500 x 3.33 !! I'll be lucky to maintain 28 min 1500 !! That I would be extremely happy with.

I must admit to being pleased, and to be honest I was a bit scared of the distance so kept a bit in reserve. I was planning to go swimming this afternoon, but I have a sore throat and a sniff, so I am watching the bike racing on the telly instead. As soon as I feel OK I am going to have a go at swimming the same distance a bit harder, so I can see how close I get to you peeps! (with my size 11 feet!)
I am keen to see how you get on with suits, because I fancy swimming in the river soon (I live close to the Thames!) but it is way to cold for me to be in the water for any length of time. Quite a few people do it in the summer, seems more fun than a chlorinated pool. -

you can also rent with option to buy. loads threads if you utfs on sites like tritalk.co.uk

i do have freakishly large feet (for my height). i tend not to use them much on distance swims though. not until the last few hundred metres anyway.
90 mins is perfectly respectable for 5k. my last was 1 hour 24 and i was totally knackered afterwards.

thanks rhb. i've found a few places with rent/buy thing. guess i was just after a recomendation. will check out aquaman for sho. cheers.
