I suppose you’d jump off a tall building if people asked you to.

We all know the answer to that one
Only if there is beer or the promise of beer involved.

That it's the number one of the human rights that every good citizen first or later should consider in the name of freedom.

Still customising saddles from time to time, ask me...
Have both small 1/4" and large 1" fancy letter sets.

Where abouts are you based? I think last time you were off Oxford St if memory serves but that was going back a while

Freelancer... no fixed work address. Live in SE4 near New X.
Will be in Brixton for next week or two. Perhaps after that I could swing by to meet you - you still working by Waterloo bridge?
-
• #437
Could meet you in Brixton one evening, buy you a beer and leave the saddle with you?
-
• #438
Could work! Only thing is my client is taking the piss daily, I have no idea how late I'm working literally til I'm finished... could be 7, could be 9, oooh a guessing game!
Can we sort it in a week or two?

Do it!

Looking for a large diameter punch I know I have somewhere, want nice clean cut circles at each end. Then I'm going to cut between and bend the tabs of leather after punching some narrow holes along each side. These will be laced to corresponding holes along the edges of the skirts. I got it all figgered out.
-
• #443
How are you going to do that whilst keeping the rails accessible for mounting to a seatpost? In my head the lacing gets in the way...
Edit; wait a minute, I'm a fool, that works fine. Damn this head cold...

How did it work out? Have been debating whether to try it myself. Not got any decent leather working tools, was just going to give it a try with a Stanley.

Stanley will be fine. Take your time. Score with care first, then just gently repeat that line a few times.
My first attempt is ok-ish. Not beutiful, and the holes I punched for lacing kept splitting. I'd just cut a narrowish slit next time (but with round ends so the split doesn't continue later), and not bother trying to lace the top flap inwards.

Cheers for that, sorry for the late reply. I might give it a crack over christmas. How do you secure the saddle whilst you cut it? Don't want to bend the rails and a vice seems a bit to heavy duty.
-
• #447
A guy I talked to when I started said mount the seat on a post, and vice that. I do it just holding the saddle. I don't need two hands to hold the blade.
-
• #448
Cheers, that makes sense. Think I just want to know the saddle will be steady when I cut it. Will update with my progress if it isn't an embarassing shambles.

I use electrical tape to guide my lines, taping both sides to check evenness before starting to cut anything, I've found that helpful.

Could you customer a motorcycle seat for old cafe racer/bobber????
