  • I'm too old and fat to be a bike courier, and for the last few weeks (after my business folded) I've been couriering in a van. Today I picked up from a big magazine/media company who are based 'near' Hanover Square. One of the guys in the post room treated me like an idiot, really very belittling and most unnecessary. I was polite, and I walked away, just doing my best to get on with my job.

At the drop, which was at another of their offices, around the corner, he was there too (he'd walked) and we shared a lift. He took the opportunity to start laying into me. We had a continued exchange where I politely but firmly held my ground. He persisted and I said to him at one point, "mate, you don't have to cunt me off like this". The guy was miffed that he wasn't able to make me feel shit about myself, I'm sure of it.

Anyway, he phoned my boss, and lied to him about what I'd said, I mean he really twisted it... I was using the "C-word" as a verb, he said I was using it as a noun!!

My boss said that the client (well, the Post Room guy) was basically pulling rank on me, and he had no choice but to let me go. He said that if it was any other company it would be no problem, but these are a big client. I've worked for that courier company on and off for five years, I've never had any complaints, but frequently got tips. And it ends like this, I get bullied by some guy for a bit of sport and I hold my head up high and he gets me fired.

I wasn't clever swearing, I put my hands up, but the guy knew full well I wasn't swearing at him, I was just swearing, and there's a huge difference.

The good news is that I was offered a writing gig last week, but I'd been struggling getting anything down after twelve hours+ at work. This afternoon, after getting the old heave-ho, I sat in a cafe, with a comfort jacket potato, and banged out the writing thing, which I've now emailed for submission. If it gets accepted by the commissioner it'll be a regular gig.

Every cloud has a silver lining... Onwards and upwards, and all that jizz.

    :)

  • there's a load of people reading just itching to use his name....

or it could've been someone else in that postroom of course.

  • Tough luck mate. Fuck I really know that situation. Hope you get more writing work.
    Conde Nast was it?

  • i wouldn't be surprised if your actions were just used by the company to get rid of you without it costing them a penny? when revenue drops off for a company any misdemeanor by their staff however slight is often used this way.
whatever the reasons good luck with the new career.

  • No names fellas, please.

I thought that too, but they said (edited).

Perhaps I could take this time out and do some pushbike work lose some bloody gut...

  • Good luck mate. Hopefully it works out for the best

(I was going to call you cuntybollox, but it seemed inappropriate right now - being a noun and all).

  • :) :) :)

  • haha will. Sorry jar, hope the writing happens.

  • cheers skoota :)

i reckon there are enough people on this forum who have never couriered but have been treated like shit by some prick at work and would happily rock up to this post room and have a quiet word on behalf of all the downtrodden out there...

  • sorry to hear, if it happened it was meant to happen i guess...
better things to come if you stay positive.

  • bad luck mate, hope the writing goes through and you aren't forced to sell this!!

(just another reason to post this again!:))

  • good luck jar. if you're out at the halloween ride tomorrow, introduce yourself, I'll buy you a beer. I'll be the one with the paul smith cape :-)

  • do you want me to punch his mouth loose?

  • Surely this is constructive dismissal?

Have a chat with the CAB, see what they think.

  • :)

Can't do the ride tomorrow, unfortunately, as it's my nephew's birthday...

I will however be in a pub later in the evening, somewhere in Stokey, somewhere on the floor.

I thought this was a joke - "cunt - structive dismissal" - but I just read the link, thanks for that.

They've got me over a barrel unfortunately, as couriers are technically self-employed.

    Appreciate that though, thanks :)

  • Dive the van through the cunt's front door.. since the brakes were poorly maintained.. whoops..

Apparently I swear too much at work. Cunts.

  • Nor poorly maintained; non-existent. It's a fashion thing.

  • Does this person know you've been fired yet?

It would be a fucking shame if you went in there for another "pickup" and accidentally smashed his so far down his throat he could chew with his arse. Terrible fucking shame.

Is it a zen thing? Like do you feel more 'at one' with the van? You must do a lot of engine braking. I suppose you need to be able to see 15 seconds into the future to drive a fixed engine van with no footbrake, but it keeps you alert and helps you to drive with more flow.

    Ooh good idea!
