Which Saddle?

  • OK, I'll give the Comp a try. Thanks

  • Yeah, I have the regular, comp and expert Romins and on the bike I can feel no difference between them at all. Holding them both in your hands, there is a slightly more cushioned layer of padding on the comp, but you really have to be looking for it and give it a good hard press with your thumb to notice it.

  • New planet x saddle arrived today, loads less sag than the other one. May buy a flite later though once I've got more money.

  • I've just fitted an SLR, been wanting to try one for a while. Always assumed minimal would be uncomfortable, but recenty been thinking it could be better for me. Will report back.

  • been riding the Slr XC Gel Flowsaddle for a while but my ride on thursday has confirmed I can't get on with it... 170g so pretty light but I think it's just a bit narrow or something-which is weird as it replaced an older gel flow that was fine. Think Toupe or Arione would be better and would anyone want to swap?

IMHO the SLR has a smaller 'sweet spot' compared to other saddles. But once set-up, it works great for me.

  • Been out for a ride on a romin today (130) bit narrow, feels alot different to my turbo, but not uncomfortable. Definately relieves pressure where it's supposed too. Will try a 143 and see how that fares.

  • First few miles on the SLR (only 10 on the way home from work...) but so far I am amazed by how comfortable it is. Feels like it fits just right, supportive in the right places and a good shape.

So cheers to hippy for the original heads up, and just wish I'd got my hands on one sooner....

+1. I had the exact same pleasant suprise. A great saddle, even though its looks and weight might suggest otherwise.
I'm going back through my Arione phase, seems to be that and the orignal flite's that do it for me.
If the opportunity comes, i always like trying out a different saddle. So, continuing with my secondhand trials/swaps, I have a Zoncolan to try and fancy giving the Romin a go after all the praise here... Then (maybe) i'll be ready to commit to a brand new saddle! Those fiziks kurves look pretty good too, bit rich though.

  • Just to let peeps know, Condor have test saddles for a lot of the Selle Italia and Fizik range including all the Versus models. Good option if you're trying to find the one

I love them. My only gripe is that i find I cant move around on them much. Not a big deal for road riding I suppose.

I put the Gobi I bought for the fat bike, on the CX commuter. Works so well. Used them before, offroad, but this is the first time I've done a 2.5 hr road stint on one.

    Currently have:

Roadbike - Ti SLR. Small sweet spot. But amazingly comfortable over distance.

29er - Selle san marco Phobos. Nice to move around on like the Gobi, but the sweet spot seems smaller.

Fixed - Selle italia Storika - Much like the SLR (well half way between SLR and Flite), just with a slightly bigger sweetspot.

CX commuter - Fizik Gobi. Loving this saddle. I'm comfortable on it, all over. So I can move about on the road. Off-road it offer ultimate control with its raised back, and fattish nose.

I am pretty convinced I am Gobi/SLR. Depending on the use of the saddle.

  • I'm sorry SF, but the Storika is one of the ugliest bike parts I've ever seen.... I might try out a Gobi in the future, have to say one of the things I like about the SLR is the slim nose, not sure if youve seen any of my posts on the matter, but over the last year I've had a lot of problems with my epididymis... and sitting on the SLR there seemed to be barely any pressure on the afflicted area, which is nothing short of fantastic news for me. Looking forward to trying it on a longer ride.

As for moving about, I don't really move about the saddle much on the road. MTB though is a different matter.

  • The Storika looks good on the Bob Jackson (IMHO etc.).

Have you tried a prologo Nago? Has the same nose. Theres something about the slant in the back end of a SLR that makes it work though.

The Gobi is full of win for off-road figits.

  • No tried a Nago, the SLR is the first racey saddle I've tried apart from a Flite or Arione (not such a fan of the Arione...)

The SLR is far easier to get cheaper, and lighter. So if it works......

  • I want to upgrade my road saddle(using a charge spoon now, material isnt great and can rub) and have heard nothing but good things for the Arione so I was going to go for that. I have got numbness in the past so that is the one thing I want to avoid. I am 5,5" and my sit bones arent that wide so what do people think about that choice? I looked at the versus range for fizik but its out the price range. What about the SLR?

IMHO the SLR works best on bikes with some saddle to bar drop. As I stated above, I dont feel its a saddle you can move around on loads, and maintain comfort.

But once you're set. It can disapear under you.

For road miles, I'm sold on it.

I struggle to understand why you see them on so many XC bikes though.

If you've got good flexibility an arione could be a good choice.

I'm pretty skinny but have 135mm (pretty average?) 'sit bones' and find the arione's narrowness puts pressure on my boney bits after 55 miles or so.

get an arione with the central cutaway groove? Can't remember what they call them

  • Specialized Toupe Comp Gel Road Saddle | Evans Cycles

Can't recomend these enough. Narrow so it doesn't pressure the sit bones much, and flexible enough that it doesn't chafe. I've had mine for 7 years, its scruffy as hell, but still works a charm

  • ^^Versus.

  • Does anyone know which london shop has san marco aspide saddles for testing?

  • Anyone?
I'm struggling to find any stockists.
Condor seems to have few but not the aspide.
    Anyone tried it?

  • I'm falling out of love with my arione. Anyone tried the version with the cutout?

  • Anyone have a White Romin for sale?
