I run in sexy woolen mittens in extreme cold.
Mittens? On your feet?!
No wonder running worries you.

spechlized elemet 1.5.
Been commuting with it so far in the early morning (6am) and late evening, quite happy with it, but suspect it will be as exactly as dan said earlier, fine for 90% of the time, except when it's really cold.

Yeah, I can echo that ^. Got rather wet on the way home last night and my hands were still nice and warm.

The missus bought me these for Christmas last year (full Leather)
http://www.swrve.co.uk/accessories.htmlThey are fantastic. Not so padded that you can't feel anything. Nice comfortable fit and very warm. Minus 5 is about the limit so liners would be needed in real cold. Last winter was fine though (Jan thru March). I think the fingerless came back on in April.

as far as neoprene gloves go, Louis Garneau sell these for £30: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/louis-garneau/monsoon-gloves-ec052066
I picked up these which are almost identical for £9:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Odyssey-4mm-Glued-BS-Neoprene-Wetsuit-Gloves-Kayak-Surf-Ski-Diving-XS-S-M-L-XL-/130900191135?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Wetsuits_WatersportsClothing_CA&var=&hash=item1e7a42679fthey are pretty good. hands stay nice and warm whilst wet, and i can actually fit them under my sealskins waterproof gloves for when the weather gets really really cold. Not sure that I will ever need to though!

do you even know what real winter is like?
the "winter" in the UK doesn't even come close to the winter in Finland and we don't have issues like sweating palms in - 20c.
The thing about the UK is it's a couple of small islands so we get a lot of weather - proper cold can be a lot more comfortable than when it is in low single figures in the UK as it is invariably wet and windy with it.
Possibly not the most extreme low temps but as an example; a friend from Durango Co. was offered a job in Edinburgh when we finished our MSc course but turned it down as he couldn't face a second Scottish winter.
Edit:
Are the seams inside the thumb on neoprene gloves comfortable when riding on the hoods? My only reservation about getting a pair. -

They're not the most comfortable so for long rides I'd probably go for something else.Merino liner gloves are great and if you can fit those inside your gloves (or then buy gloves for winter which do fit them inside), they add a layer of warmth.

ah yeah. Had a look at those the other day in Evans - look nice and felt nicer. Pretty sure I would trash them in about 5 mins though.

I've got some, I rate them highly, surprisingly tough, also.
I'm talking neoprene because I've got a range of gloves and in the right circumstances (cold steady downpour) they do a better job than other options. If its cold and dry or just light rain I use a silk liner and madison tempest winter glove.
There's no point thinking one glove can handle every type of winter weather let alone UK to Finland. Your statement is glib and pointless. They are on the market because they have an application.
