Better than a capped end for shooting straight: a guide of sorts so you know when your mallet is straight. Ray uses a chopstick under the wrap, some have carbon ski poles which are 'aero' and will give you a sense of where the mallet is without looking at it. I personally don't bother, it's just another thing to think about...

...and i've made a few mallets before and this is the best way ive found so far to getting the pole in straight and perpendicular to the tube... i wrap the tube with graph paper (fucking sad) you can mark where the hole is on both sides... ie drill one side first then the opposite. i also pilot all my holes first.
While you have the grid paper on you can also work out a pattern if you want.
but saying that the very first mallet i made now belongs to brain flick and i believe is still going strong. which i litterally drilled 2 holes to make.
oh and another tip to saw the gas pipping straight... i use a roll of celotape to help mark out the line. Mark then put the tube through the celotape roll and push against the roll and the tube so its flat against the outside of the tube, and mark. Also when sawing i go round the tube in little turns which helps to get the edge straight (as long as you follow the markings)
im gonna make another mallet the week end so i'll pic TFU.

jol used to rock the alu hockey stick... he drilled the mighty thor mallet and it was still too heavy.
-
• #33
Yeah, you could drill more but I think you would loose strength.
Ray, you got a spare ski pole?
I want to try a shorter mallet. -

It's probably best if I make a second mallet sooner (while I still have a mallet), rather than later (when my mallet explodes). So if anyone wants to by pole buddies (just for you, Tynan), let's do it!

Has anyone here made a polo mallet with an aluminum head? I have some 50x1.5mm pipe. Think I might make a mallet head out of it.
-
• #50
Not a sensible idea. They get sharp as they wear down and weigh far too much.
Does anyone have any tips for capping the ends of the mallet head? What to use etc...
I find occasionally that the ball doesn't hit straight. I'm sure its nothing to do with the fact that I'm shite at polo.
