  • I suppose that where the line is drawn - those tyres are designed more for racing than commuting upon thousand of broken glass and condom in London.

  • You've got 70 squid worth of tyres on your bike? Is your home media set-up a BANG & OLUSEN??

    Jaw drops.

    Standard S33 tubs. Cheap Cheap!

I've got a Sanyo tape deck though!

Don't need £ to look this good! ;-)

excellent, the first time i chuckled today was when i read this. thank you.

  • Hah, really funny to read what a wrote in 2008... now I actually own 3 wheels with Tufo-tubs on them :) And I'll call the ride quality fine compared to normal tires.. didn't have a puncture yet though.

Only reason I use the tubs is the bling-factor of the wheels though, one disc, one 4-spoke corima, and one track shamal front. And I don't ride them that often.

  • most rims have a max pressure too, so you would
a, get a sore arse on the roads
    b, blow your rim.......ooo er!

Rim wont blow, as the airpressure is SOLELY in the tyre. The tyre inflates ABOVE the rim, and not expand within it.

As for puncture resistance, that was also mentioned, it is pretty good, and does have a puncture protection belt. There is a separate goo that is sold for Tufo tyres, and seals punctures up to 5mm in length.

Expensive yes, but definitely an option. Fast, nice colours, and very repairable, WITHOUT removing the tyre.

This applies to the tubular clincher range.

  • Why can't they make a clincher that will fit on a Tubular rim. Then I wouldn't of had to walk home in the rain/hail/thunder today. Sod's law.

  • As for that, I can't see a way of doing that, the rims doesn't have anything for the clincher tyres to grab onto.

unless they manufacturer tub tyres with a double sided sellotape on it that can withstand the sheer pressure, I doubt there's a way for a quick fitting tubs.

  • Just gaffa tape the clincher tire to the tubular rim. works fine.

  • The diameter of tubular rims are also slightly larger than clincher 700c rims I think.. At least on the Planet X I can't use tubs larger than 21mm, but a 23mm Open Corsa clincher works fine.

  • Hoping @andyp sees this dredge, because my lady is about to take on triathlon training, and she wanted recommendations for cycling. Andy, is the Tufo a reasonable compromise, or not recommended? @hippy and @edscoble, and anybody else, I'd appreciate your input.

  • If she has clincher rims why use Tufo? Clinchers are more practical, there are more options available to suit different requirements and the fast ones are faster than tubs now.

  • I've just fitted one on a customer, do not recommend, very stiff and heavy.

    Clincher is faster (think GP4000s).

  • Cheers fellas. I'll let the battleaxe know.

  • Tufo seem to be like marmite, either loved or hated. But their tubular clincher things are an utter waste of time. A decent clincher would be better, add a latex tube and it would be miles better.

  • I'll give her the feedback. She's in training now, and the race is still a way off.

  • My 2p.

I swear by tubs. This mainly because (A) the roads arent very stabby up here, and (B) I feel safe riding down mountains on them.

For your usual tri usuage, especially in the UK. Clinchers are probably better. Things will likely be flatish, and the roads more stabby.

My advice would be to buy some 'open tubulars' like veloflex, and run them with latex inners. Then carry a spare butyl inner. Because latex inners are a bitch to fit on the road.

I've currently started tri training myself. I'm finding brick sessions very tough. Swimming then riding leaves you feeling fatigued on the bike, and riding then running ruins your usual run style as the legs are unevenly fatigued. I'm finding little things like riding to the pool if possible, or schedualing a run directly after riding home from work, really help.

  • Tubs are brilliant on..... a tubular rim. Which is almost always lighter than a clincher rim. Really don't understand the thinking on these. Plus Tufos, in my experience, ride like a sack of shit compared to a good tub, or even an average tub. Plus they have some of the highest rolling resistance of any tubular. Oh, and their self seal compound that supposedly makes up for their non-repairability doesn't work either.

  • Good job guys.

Smallfurry! Good to see you here guy. I think her Tri is in California. She lives in DC, and is a former Calif girl. I'm moving there next year, and she's going to be whipping me into shape.

  • Wow. Exciting stuff. Enjoy.
