Near misses...

  • today, after almost getting hit by a car in the right hand lane (i was in left), last minute they decided they wanted to go left, i don't know how or why but my wheels (23s) slipped on something and i went down going round the roundabout outside swanshursts school.

luckily there was distance between me and the car behind, so he was able to stop in time but boy it could have been hairy.

apart from a few cuts, bruised knee and ripped clothes, i'm ok. could have been an oil patch, i don't know but i'm definitely going to start winter time cruising and not race everywhere.

  • Was it this roundabout? I go past there quite often. I wouldve thought it was a drain cover but I dont think there is any there.

  • yeah it was that one DFP. it happened literally where it says 'Brook Ln' on the map underneath the roundabout. theres no drains there, still don't what happened, oil patch, black ice? though i didnt think it was cold enough for that. got my knee checked out, no fractures or anything but i won't be able to ride for a few weeks.

i have to stop wrecking my body.

  • the roads are well dodgy out there today - be careful!

i was out on a nice relaxing countryside ride this morning, around 10am, 'safe' in the knowledge that it was above freezing all night long. unfortunately, the weather tells you air temperatures and doesn't take account of wind either, any patch of road that was exposed to the wind had a nice coating of ice on the top. i had several scary moments and wound up on my side in the middle of a national speed limit road before i had a change to take my hands off the bars!

at least when it happens that fast you can't get your arms out and hurt your wrist/collar bones.

i can see myself driving to work and using the peasant wagon a fair bit over the next few months - it just isn't worth going under the wheels of a car/bus/lorry.

  • I'll second that - massively. I'm struggling out there at the moment. The amount of caution i am using during some stretches of road is unbelievable... i could run faster. But with the impending doom of being hit by motorists, walked out on by pedestrians, as well as trying to negotiate the lubed-up roads - its a lottery.
Snapped my chain this morning, pulling off at a set of lights. It hurts to pee right now.

  • oooh, nasty. i don't understand how chains snap... never seems to happen to me, perhaps i'm not pushing hard enough.

  • The fear of chain snap used to worry me.

I have a really rubbish £2 chain from ASDA combined with 2-3 different links to get the right length as the chain stretched over time. Theres even a half link in there.

I cleaned & oiled it for the first time in about 5 months recently too.

I cannot see how it would be possible to snap a good quality 1/2 inch chain. Even a rubbish chain like mine is being put through much less stresses than a 3/32 chain on a multi-speed drivetrain where its getting pushed on & off rings and almost always being run diagonally.

A single speed drivetrain with a quality chain is so bloody efficient & optimal, I just dont get how you did it.

Look at DWS, he runs a 3/32 chain with a diagonal chainline, big fella but as he says chain doesnt snap.

Mustve been scary when it happened, you had to walk to destination in cleats aswell right?

  • I've snapped a couple of 1/8 chains in single speed mode, always as i'm just about power off from some lights. its a right bastard having to walk to work.

  • I'd like to say the chain snapped because it just couldn't take the sheer output from my elite, powerful acceleration, but in hindsight, i've had numerous attacks on my bike lock recently - and i'm wondering if there's been a hint of sabotage there.... although it was fine all the way to Wolverhampton. Thankfully - i wasn't far from Fred Williams Cycles, who hooked me up with a replacement.

  • 'diagonal chainline' - the straightness of my chain is beyond refute.

    'big fella' - all muscle.

  • Not so much a near miss, but full contact. I am nursing two fractured ribs, and a frickin' sore neck.
Got smashed into by an Audi this morning on the way to work. Got swept off my bike and went through the windscreen. The driver then slammed on his brakes, dumping me in the middle of Wednesbury roundabout.
The thing is, the driver couldn't see me coming round the roundabout because of the glare coming off the road. Its blinding. I was unaware of it, but if it had been the Biffa refuse truck behind him - i wouldn't be typing this now.
Be safe - even when the sun's out!!

  • ^^ Did you find out why he pulled out while he was blinded? I assume he took a moment to consider the fact he was blinded, and perhaps slowed down/remained stationary accordingly?

  • gutted, heal up soon

    did the bike survive?

are you taking it any furthur with the guy?

  • Cheers Barber, all is fine with my trusty steed, well- i need new drop bars. He needs a new windscreen, headlightand bonnet! The fella that drove into me was in a bad way, really shaken up. He's offered to pay for any repairs though.

  • drop your bike in for an alignment-check - better safe than sorry.

  • Bumboclart.

Dan I hope you are OK bossman... Two broken ribs? Me and You this Sunday pal, imagine that!

  • Ouch & hope you're riding again soon.

  • any colliders get well soon and don’t let the bastards get to you.
I had another near miss this morning, well onto a big r'bout, blue rinser just carries on merrily over the give way line into my path, cue big swerve coupled with wide arm swinging by me to get the fuck back.
honestly half these over 60s are oblivious to anything.

  • I've been kamikazing roundabouts last couple of days trying to get on one of these threads.

    ????

  • i'm due a good accident soon, must be 12 months since i last fell off now.

  • you may like to know (or not, tough shit) radio bore were doing a piece about driving insurance claims, as you would expect the young males have the greatest amount, then it levels until females over 80, where again there are disproportionate claims,
the old bill cant do anything until there are incidents, even if they see blue rinsers driving terribly............
    ho hum.

  • i also heard that on radio this morning... Shouldn't you have been working then J? ;)
