  • THREAD RESURRECTION

I just spent ages writing this out and then pressed backspace by accident-FML part 2. FML part 1(the shortened version) goes like this...

Riding down Pershore Rd cycle lane, dickhead accelerates across junction with out looking, I brake/swerve like hell, narrowly miss going over the front and smash into wheel. Driver stops finally up next road and sits in car. Pretty gormless, knows its a cycle lane but didnt see fully illuminated me riding white bike practically on top of her! Swap deets, Police see us do this but don't give a shit because theyre pulling someone else. I'm normally pretty aggro but just not in the mood/surprised she stopped. Bike gets off lightly, wheel, headset, bars all need sorting, brake fucked etc but bike rideable & as I was on my way to critical mass I think fuck it, now I'm definitely going! Ride most of CM one handed as my wrist hurts pretty bad and then woke up this morning with THE worst neck and back pain...ride to work was jokes slow and had to relocate work comp screen so I don't have to move a muscle. To make it clear I've suffered much much worse (see NY cab collision and learning to fly/trying to unimbed chain from stomach) but I'm just SO sick of idiotic drivers & want to do something...not sure there's much point in reporting it, don't have insurance so not sure I can claim off hers, write her a fucking angry letter, find her car and slash her tyres?!
    ADVICE?

  • Report it.

  • Report it, to make sure you have an incident number. You don't need your own insurance to claim off hers, an incident number makes claims easier. Make sure she get's the bill for sorting the bike.

  • Go to a police station right away. When you make the statement officers can take note of any injuries however small. damage is damage.

Same goes for the bike, if you actually got hit the police might help you get recompense, they did with me the last time I ended up in this situation. They were actually very helpful:

  • neck pain = claim

  • I live in southend, tonight was 'cruise night' where the boy racers park up their shit cars along the seafront and stand around talking about them. Really windy today and had a huge tailwind, was probably doing 30+ along the clear roads, and some massive cunt from one of these groups either tries to spear me off or tries to scare me, but i was going too fast for him to reach me.

Looked like he went for it though, what a cunt.

  • The comfort is in knowing that he has a shit life

  • Yeah, still pissed off! I could have been an old man, would have been a nasty spill for sure!

  • @MG - report it, your injuries are probably just strains (hopefully) but take no chances and future-proof yourself in case you need time off work later.

    Bad news

  • Thanks all. Due to the cop at the scene absolutely not giving a shit I was put off but just spoken to them on the phone and although still extremely unhelpful I'm going in to the local station in a few minutes. Because I wasn't seriously injured I didn't want to make a claim, especially if she tries to counter claim but 'that'll never learn her'...

@DFP - nice. Wish my experiences with the cops ended like that!

  • I was hit and run on the corner of albert and curzon, the fucking driver deliberately cut across my path, nailed me. my knee is now fucked, my jeans were torn, i had witnesses, nearly got run over by a giant lorry that was behind me. I had the cunts reg and when i reported it the pigs insisted i follow through with pressing charges so i did. but i had a letter the other day saying that there was no point i n chasing the matter any further due to lack of evidence, FUCK THE POLICE. You are best off beating the fuck out of the driver and smashing their car up if you get the chance too

  • but sadly then, you are no better than the driver. I feel your anger, having experienced a number of hits over the last year, but it aint going to get better until Birmingham is set up to accomodate cyclists in the city centre. Heal the fuck up though man.

  • yeah man, I dont think I could risk beating someone for their own stupidity, but its just nice sometimes to imagine it

Sounds like you need a lawyer or something. An injury IS evidence. Youve got plenty enough to take this to court.

For me, just my word was enough to convince both the police officer and his seniors that I had a case that could go to court. I had no injuries, no bike damage and no evidence at all. Just my word.

  • I got hit yesterday, i'm ok. had a good witness to the driver agreeing to exchange details but then driving off. reported to the police, got a bike report done.

been told now to wait it out and go through the process of it or call motor insurance bureau, find out drivers insurance company, ring them directly and tell them the situation and that I want to claim for a new bike.

this is useful too to find out if the driver is insured or not:

  • Harsh! Didn't you just get a new bike too? Are you injured at all?

  • No I'm ok, managed to stay upright, luckily the bike doesn't have toe cages/straps. Worst bit is I was on my gf's bike.

No new bike here. I'm beater central...

  • ffs

whats going on with these deekheads lately? seem to be on a mission to kill brums cycling population.

  • I blame the snow - its brought out an 'everyman for himself - the rules don't matter anymore' style of driving where everyone is constantly speeding around like their lives depend on it. It seems in digbeth that its now ok to go through reds as long as you've seen them orange at some point in the past.

  • so few people leave a big enough gap inbetween theirs and the car in front, and people actually accelerate at junctions and then brake sharply when they reach the junction. have they lost their minds? or did driving instructors stop teaching people about stopping distance and fuel efficiency?

  • It was thrown out with how much room to leave when passing cyclists and parked cars....

Especially on all the major roundabouts around the city on a wet day. They are all linked onto dual carraigeways with people doing 50mph or whatever. And they all blast around the roundabouts without even slowing if there are no oncoming cars.

Stopping distance is massive in the wet at those speeds, even at 30mph. Ive seen cars skid into each other, and had a car skid into me once too even though I was in the primary position, middle of lane. Car just came from the left like I wasnt there as the roundabout was empty except for me.

  • That happened to me but in dry conditions and with no skidding

    almost shat myself

  • I think it happens every day to me, particularly on Pagoda Island, they're all impatient. I make tons of eye contact and frown/glare at anything that moves, but am convinced that one day I'll run into the back of a car because I'm looking out for cars from behind.
