  • I'm not sure we really got our act together

But that's part of our endearing charm...

  • We always say that when we lose.

I like awards, it means we can ride around with a smug look and a swagger and lord it over the peasants on their hybrids... we're clearly more deserving of the road space.

Oh, and we could've got drunk on the proceeds.

When B&S won the Brit Award, we got so much free booze it was nuts. I think we were drunk for about 3 months afterwards. Never knock a good award, or even a bad one... they're all good for laughs.

Speaking of which, why the hell haven't I been nominated for an MBE already?

B&S? belle and sebastian? what was your involvement there then?? just out of curiosity like.

Belle & Sebastian? One of my favorite bands ever? What have you got to do with them?

  • You suck. I don't!

  • Awards are meaningless anyway, look at the Mercury Music Prize/Brit Awards/NME Awards etc

When I was in one of my many failed bands, I once sat in a meeting with several big music industry people discussing release schedules and all that, one person from marketing piped up and said "we should definitely put this up for the Mercury Music prize" - the thing is we had not delivered the album we were discussing yet !!, he (nor anyone else) had even heard it and already they were putting it up for prizes !!

I always thought stuff was nominated on it's merit, but in all truth those Mercury/Mobo/NME/MTV awards are just naked marketing exercises - but I suspect you might know that already !

    The mind boggles.

  • The label, Jeepster. There was only 3 of us at the label (actually 5 at that moment in time, but 3 in general). They were signed to us. Someone had put the band forward for the Brit award (not us or the band), and it was the first time that a Brit Award had internet voting, and through some viral marketing I let people know that the voting wasn't using cookie or email authentication... which means IP address authentication... and so given that this was the age of dial-up and DHCP the viral campaign was to simply tell all fans to set home pages of their machines to the voting URL, so upon every login on every machine affected, votes were registered. And we won, and it got called fixing, but it's not really... it's just disseminating the knowledge to fans about how to use social power to achieve something greater than that which an individual or company could have done.

Oh, and my name is on the back of that album (Boy With The Arab Strap) and quite a few others. And my flat has Gold and Silver discs on the wall. Usual stuff from the music industry... along with being broke as fuck for the duration. Being a techie tripled my wage overnight, which kind of shows how little we made from music. The bands did really well though. And truly, I'm not bitter... I spent a decade in the music industry and I love my decade in the tech industry way more.

Now that is an idea. With the relatively new "People's Honours" couldn't we mount a campaign for VB to receive an OBE or better? He has done so much for his community and for London's famous London that he ought to be recognised. If you disagree, why not support the campaign in an ironic way to demonstrate what is wrong with the honours system. Either way "arise Sir Velocity Boy"

  • Brilliant. The only people I know involved with the music biz are either bitter or knob ends. Thanks for B&S, no thanks for Snow Patrol! ;)

  • I think those categories apply to people who stay in the industry. The people who I know who left after a good stint really enjoyed it and are glad to be out of it and quite happy now.

There are a few exceptions, one of the guys who is VP at Beggars is also one of the most calm and happy people I've ever met. He doesn't milk the label, and is just so in love with music still. Impressive stuff given how easy it is to get wrapped up in it all.

Now that would be a laugh. Would they let someone into Buckingham Palace wearing Sidi's and smelling like a horse?

Who gave you my details ?

  • I know a dude called Toby at Beggars. Sound feller.

  • Who gave you my details ?

Found them on a list someone sent me a couple of days back...

The Royals would think you were one of them if you smelled like a horse. You could bluff that Sidis were the finest Italian riding shoes.

    fixed

  • Ha! All this talk is reminding me of the advertising industry. I've met some of the loveliest people you could imagine and some of the most back-stabbing cocks on the planet.

They just need to calm down, take their time and get their aim right.

  • The best facility award went to Frampton Park Estate bike parking in Hackney and parking at Shadwell DLR station.

Being useful for people who aren't in either Hackney or Shadwell fail.

    Sinister ;-)

+-+ "legion of bedroom saddo devotees" "tech-heads and students" +-+
+-+ "the cardie wearing biscuit nibbling belle & sebastian list" +-+
+-+ "sinsietr is a bit freaky" - stuart david, looper +-+

About 20 of those votes were me :-)

  • Sinister, the web site, various universities, a 5,000+ paper mailout, a 25,000+ email new list.

I think we told everyone and then some. But dear old Sinister grandpa shat himself when it got front page of the daily record.

Award dedicated to VB and the whole LFGSS community. "Ride smug & swagger".

  • I didn't give a shit 'til we lost.

    Ain't that always the way?
