YAAY
get a peugeot, not too hard to find, reliable for average users i believe.
I'm not a pro but every time i ride it it's always good.
FYI
After putting the fixed cog on the flip flop hub i've never changed it back to ss.
It's just a nice feeling that makes you one thing with the bike and is also more efficient in town, even down hill. I kinda don't trust the brakes (!!!!) I know it sounds weird but it's what i do feel sometimes.
Coming from a big motorbike itis kind of similar (you always have a gear that slows you down on low rev).Going to NYC tomorrow, gonna buy a few new accessory for it ;-)

Hello
New boy here.
I just bought a old Pug and will be attempting to convert to a FG/SS. Edy, you may have some questions coming your way!
I'll post some 'before' photos when I get home as I cant do it at work then the daft questions will begin...

Photos as mentioned.
What I really need to confirm is the BB type and the sizing of the drop outs. Will be taking it apart next week.
-
• #83
the drop out is long enough to able to use a fixed wheel, and from the look of it, the BB should be english (since the bike seemed to be sold in Halfords when it was new).

Cheers.
Another while Im at it...
Bolts on the crank? Looks/measures about 14 or 15mm (another bloody tool to buy) Still think it will be an English BB behind this?

Use the link that's posted on the first page to (roughly) work out the date from the serial number.
http://cyclespeugeot.com/SerialNumbers.html
Although Ed is probably right. He usually is when it comes to Peugeots!

^^^Cheers
I have seen that page and cant get my serial number to tie in, it does say there are exceptions so I guess my bike is one of them.

I am a new peugeot rider too. Some lovely inspiring bikes on here. Not sure about the risers, I am a fan of the beautiful original drops, but with grips instead of tape. When my pug project is finished I will get some photos up!

just buy a cheap socket set. you will have to get some single ring chainring bolts (£5) to hold one chainring to the crank. you dont have to take off the crank to do this. -

quick fix solution: take off all the gear shifters, cables etc... line up the chain from the inner chainring to one of the smaller cogs on the wheel, shorten the chain so its the right length and bobs your uncle! if you're going single speed that is... you can take off the cogs off the back wheel, put on a bmx freewheel, respace the axle and re-dish the wheel, but thats another story. better to buy a new back wheel maybe?

Cheers for the replies mate. I ended up buying new track whels from Planet-x/On-one. The wheels are now more expensive than the bike.
Should be near ride-able in a week or so, need to get a fixed cog and sort out the chainline with a new BB (hopefully - it looks a mile out as it is just now...)
-
• #95
use the inner ring of your crank, that should line up ok. only problem is it might only have 40 or so teeth (i use 42-16 fixed). you might be able to put the outer ring in the place of the inner ring, but that would probably be 50 or so teeth. you might want to use the smaller ring as its winter and its crap when you're riding into the wind up a big hill in the pouring rain with a high ratio!?
-
• #96
42-16 is a bit spinny but i encounter quite a few hills day to day and i don't feel like walking. also, you might want to break yourself in gently to the whole non stop pedaling malarky. another thing, chainlines look a bit funny when the bike is upside down, try the right way up.

{edit} regarding converting {edit}
I did it the other way.
I used the outer ring and original BB... and dished and spaced a track hubbed wheel.
-
• #98
I just converted a near to identical (probably a bit older) peugeot.
I'd stick some nice bullhorns on that, and get your ratio right (i'm currently thinking abou 42-15) and they're lovely frames for the job.

+1 to a certain Mr...
Douglas Reynholm!
Cheers... One last question - was it sealed cartridge bearings or... loose balls, so to speak? ;-)
