  • ^^ Omg so have you worked with Rory Sutherland? I lurve him.

  • Guys, as young thrusters you shock me. In terms of advertising that is. Why would you want to be in certain types of media? It's about ideas not media platforms.

I think you've misinterpreted my mention of 'platform' I simply didn't want to typecast myself as say 'I only want to do TV adverts!' because that's unrealistic and as you point out, shrinking.

My point is that the kind of work I do at the moment doesn't allow for interesting and innovative ideas from us young thrusters as much as (I suspect) something open ended like advertising would.

At least the companies I work for don't seem to let it - it's current affairs type stuff. There are only so many ways you can present it and maintain credibility.

Besides digital and outdoor digital Adshels posters etc. etc. are exploding and have been for the past 5 years, traditional print and other traditional platforms are shrinking in comparison in terms of media spend. Don't get me wrong I'm not a media bod have just worked as a creative director for many years (last 6 Publicis and Ogilvy) so have good knowledge about these things.
    This stuff's interesting.

Ever heard of The School of Communication Arts?
    Check it out.

I'm open to the idea of doing an MA, but I think my first stop is actually figuring out a bit more how the industry works, the various processes and types of people and roles involved.

I suspect that I'd like to carry on producing either at production companies hired by agencies, or if agencies actually have production departments (though I suspect not but that they outsource?) then working in one of those - but that confirms my point, I don't really know how these things happen. I just know that the problems I solve as a producer in my work at the moment aren't satisfying me and I think working on traditional adverts (even though they may be a shrinking medium) might.

At the risk of sounding like an old groomer I'm happy to pass on industry advice at some forum meet like souths drinks for example. PM me if you'd like to arrange, in case you're wondering about credentials have won D&ADs plus Cream plus Campaign Digital Gold etc. etc. yes appearances can be deceptive.

/ambles off to find out when Souths are.

  • @ Scoot, yes Rory is a nice guy, always enthusiastic about creativity and great fun.

@ xanderh, if I can be of any help and offer any advice (as an old industry warhorse) then do let me know - I'd be happy to. Amongst other things I'm a mentor at the SCA so that involves offering advice to youngsters wanting to get into advertising.

@ CYOA, my advice about platforms was more meant for xanderh not you. The SCA (School of Communication Arts) doesn't offer an MA but google it anyway. I've done a lot of work in the past few years for clients like Hewlett Packard, Renault and others where film production was a key part to the project/communication. The production company we used was RSA in Soho (Ridley Scott Associates). Both the producer and director on all projects were great fun and lovely to work with (even if the director was a bit nuts it was in a good way ;) if I can be of any help in terms of offering advice or opinions based on experience then please feel free to give me a shout.

  • You're a good'un. Ta and I shall formulate my thoughts a bit in the meantime.

  • Dougal Wilson ^

    Clever chap.

  • I like that.

Im working on a new ad for Stride Gum at the moment. Aimed at 17 year olds in the states.
Got a few ideas but not sure about any of them so far.

Really think an lfgss ad agency would do good

  • lurpak ad on the imax at waterloo looks great when you're cycling towards it over the bridge

  • Urgh

  • Apart from the dodgy creak which seemed to be in time with no moving parts on the bike, I quite liked that.

  • I've just seen the most nauseating advert ever. Some bank advertising their mobile app- idiotic gap yah girl loses her money, calls daddy, daddy makes it alright. If that was my daughter I wouldn't be texting her cash to fritter away finding herself in India or whatever. And then look so happy about it! Unless I'm missing something. Maybe he looks happy because it's delaying her inevitable return to their tedious suburban home. Or maybe I am just too grumpy for tv right now.

  • C4 Paralympics ad is inspiring to say the least.
Channel 4 Paralympics - Meet the Superhumans - YouTube
