• Just a reminder (originally recommended by VeeVee earlier in this thread): if you use the tfl hazard reporter, you're alerting them to a council's responsibilty (which tfl then pass on to that authority). It means they're under more obligation to log it, do something about it. Allegedly.

  • TFL's word more important than ours is it? We'll see about that! Hmmpf!

  • No, just that it means a third party, with teeth, are involved.

  • TFL's buses cause most of the damage, they should bloody get involved.
(No Oliver, it's not trucks doing that, it's the buses.)

  • My favourite is the Northbound stretch of Green Lanes just where the bridge for Harringay Green Lanes is. The bus lane is absolutely knackered and has been reported many times but, maybe to try and limit their liability in the absence of fixing it, they've just put up a sign saying "Potholes"

  • Here is my report - including picture and stating it is a hazard for cyclists. Bussed it in today so will check it out tomorrow. I like my wheels too much to try the theory of smacking into it

Well the impressive part is the pothole has been patched

The not so impressive part it seems to have been done on the cheap so it will probably be fooked again in a weeks time. A real bodge job

I think they just bung a load of gravel into the pothole the first few times you report it to cover themselves legally. I had to report one on Camden Road about four times before they did a proper repair.

  • I thought that was the default 'proper' repair.

    Roads are jokes.

  • Does anyone have a basic draft of a letter I can use for seeking compensation for damages from a council?

Is there any point lawyering up for minor claims?

  • No

Yes. Probably. Were you injured too?

Never saw your reply, but YES!

How injured do I have to be? I'm nails man and wear about 3 layers during winter. I have a headache and sore neck but to be honest I get the same symptoms after sinking a dozen pints and passing out on the sofa.

  • Fuck that. I'm tired of absorbing damage and costs caused by other cunts. I want money now.

  • Wow, a bit of rain and it really becomes apparent that London's roads are not fit for purpose. Large chunks of tarmac missing everywhere on my commute. Some covered with water, some not. It's almost impossible to keep an eye on all the peds, cars as well as the road surface. Time to quit and join the Tube masses..

  • I nearly came a cropper this evening by a pothole in puddle combo, off to report it now.

I had an annoying follow up email the other day from Lewisham council saying Honor Oak road isn't a priority this year. It's a fucking hazard cause it's so busy, fix it you gits!

The Council has recently (in 2012) completed a detailed structural condition survey of all its roads (this was last completed in 2001). Data from this survey has been used along with information from our regular visual inspections, and a number of other factors, to develop the resurfacing list. The number of roads resurfaced each year is dependant on the amount of funding available each financial year. I'm afraid that Honor Oak Road has not attracted sufficient priority to be included in this year's resurfacing list.

We do safety inspect every adopted highway on a regular basis. Any area which the inspector thinks may become an imminent danger to users is noted and a repair arranged. Unfortunately the Council's budget for highway maintenance is limited and we focus on repairing the worst areas in the borough. We do not currently have the resources to repair areas that are simply worn and unsightly, but not considered hazardous at this time. Our inspectors will continue to monitor the condition of this road and will arrange for any necessary repairs to be carried out.

If you note any particular defects please let me know giving a precise location and I will arrange an interim inspection.

    I hope this is helpful.

    regards

    yeah this!
went on a reporting rampage yester. Let's see...

  • I'm off to the fatbike thread to get something suitable for Britain's goat tracks..

  • From Oliver in the Grid thread...

"Damaged rural roads could be abandoned, warn councils"

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26014054

Resurfacing them with something that lasts more than a month might be a start.

  • Britain's goat tracks..

quoting this in my reports from now on...

  • A friend of mine went over the bars at the junction between Balls Pond Rd and Southgate road last November. It was dark and the pothole was massive. It was luckily just to the side of the main route, so he didnt end up under a wheel.
Stopped up kerbside to assess the damage (not much thankfully) and a policecar noticed us and asked if he was OK. We pointed out the pothole and went on our way.
2 days later it was filled in. Might be a coincidence, but most probably not. Not too bad, I'd say this time.

  • I've got my FOI request from Ealing. I can't make sense of it.
Guess I should now try and squeeze them for damages anyway.

There's a shit tonne of new potholes since I was in Majorca. Reported a huge one on Marylebone Road.

  • I'd be interested to see how the councils prioritise road resurfacing. My commute takes me through Dulwich Village, parts of which have been recently resurfaced, which is nice. Further on but still in the same borough; Camberwell Road into Walworth Road is essentially one massive pothole and is in far worse condition than Dulwich ever was. Obviously there are lots of very rich people in Dulwich Village and lots of very poor people in Camberwell but surely the rich people drive through Camberwell to get home? On the upside Camberwell Road is providing excellent training for my forthcoming trip to the pave of Northern France.
