  • Cash is king- move from £6.70 per hour to £67 per hour and the job suddenly gets a lot more reasonable.

My issue with the Sargents job is that it seemed to be designed to create a hand to mouth existence for the "self employed" mech.

If they could be sure of taking home £350 per day then it's a great opportunity.

  • Yep, many places simply want an easy ride with freelancers instead of properly employing people.

  • You're free to go live in Europe you know.

    Bye

EDIT: Actually, go live in fucking Burma then come back and tell us all how much this place sucks. Ungrateful.

The UK is in Europe. And being better than Burma is hardly much of a boast is it?

  • The UK is in Europe.

I haven't met many English who'd share your believes.

  • I have an opportunity if you're interested in food and sustainability, carrying out surveys of restaurants either online or over the phone. We pay a fixed price per survey and you will ideally be self-employed. You won't get rich, you won't get to eat out on us and there's no expense account, but - we will train you, the pay is fair, the work is flexible and can be done from home. You could use our office too.

You need to be articulate, sharp and know a bit about how restaurants operate and the principles of sustainability as they effect the restaurant sector - supply chain, energy, water, waste, CSR, etc. But the articulate and smart bit is most important. How much work we can give you depends on many things but we'll get you started and more will come your way if you do it well. We're growing and opportunities to join the paid team may come over time - being known to us won't hurt your chances.

PM me if you're genuinely interested and I'll take it from there.

  • But the articulate and smart bit is most important.

    Pity. I like flexible jobs.

  • Cycle Surgery, Shepherds Bush are looking for some peeps to lessen the load on the already pretty strung out staff. Drop a CV by.

  • Hello,
I would like to point out the opportunity above advertised is not a trick to get someone to work for free or minimum wage with no benefits. Due to various circumstances external to the shop, it may well be that the work shop would be unmanned for up to 4 days in the next year or so.The shop is currently equipped with many specialist tools, which have taken years to collect, that are difficult to source and are expensive. The idea of someone using the space and the tools at hand for a small fee is an idea that is used quite frequently in hairdressing, where hair dressers 'rent a chair'.

Sargent and Co are not asking someone to undergo any kind of indoctrination and swear allegiance to a 'pretentious ethos' is about making sure it's the right person for the job, for example a mechanic with vast experience in servicing suspension forks would not have the necessary tools or customer base to work from this shop and may find they that they do not relate so well to the customers we get, as the majority are passionate about Classic Steel bikes.
A mechanic working form the shop would keep all of their takings and have access to many trade accounts, again which take time and money to invest and build up. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that they could manage to draw a pretty good wage from here.

In response to 'yup no redundancy money , no sick pay , no holiday pay no unemployment benefit cos you were self employed and didnt pay your stamp etc'

As someone else mentioned tax returns are every easy to complete for anybody with a reasonable degree of common sense, and made even easier when you pay one fee per week for your space and do not have multiple outgoings. It is also very easy to set up NI contributions as a monthly direct debit. Managing cash flow is key to managing any business regardless of takings, and this includes setting money aside for holidays, which when you work for yourself are not limited like they are when you work for most companies. Also I would say the glory days of private sector companies 'looking after' you when you are ill, pregnant, retiring are fading away and the public sector is looking like it will follow suit slowly, but surely.

I think many of the comments made here are presumptuous and to an extent naive. It is quite feasible that someone operates from here with their own existing business and uses the space to build their business, albeit a business that 'sits' comfortably with Sargent and Co, 2 business can compliment one another not just compete. This is not about exploiting people, exploiting people could be said to be paying them £15,000 and generating £50,000 of profit out of them , not letting them have share of it, making them sign a contract which stipulates they must take holidays at a set time of the year and must be able to work bank holidays and any other time 'the company deems fit'.
Everything is open to interpretation, and I like to think as adults we have the ability, courage and intelligence to view things from different angles and not be make caustic remarks without any real though to them and in response to 'UK this place fucking sucks', please do feel free to fuck off.

  • I think the thing that stuck out the most to me was the submitting receipts at month end- that suggests a degree of control and oversight into the role that turns it into just that, a role, rather than a self contained business operating within your premises.

The 2right person" may well make out like a bandit, that said

  • This was only to make sure the said mechanic did not
    a) offer substantially lower prices,
    b) offer substantially higher prices
    c) use the trade accounts to set up a an ebay spares parts business,
It's not to act as Big Brother

not sure what gives you the right to tell me to fuck off , i wasnt aiming my comments at your business merely the fact that many many companies use this self employed technique to exploit workers , i myself have been self employed for 14 years and have no qualms with your business and if i was at all qualified i might even apply !

  • do you see any link of my comment to your fricking company sargent ?

  • why do you feel the right to say my country 'sucks'. It is rude and offensive. I don't like it. Your comment only warranted rudeness back. I do not wish to make any enemies, I am simply responding to the comments made. I don't wish to start some online rage, I have answered any queries or issues that people seemed to have in an honest way.

  • I've spent a few years in the bike trade, I'm not lightly saying that I don't think it's a great deal. Admittedly my experience with being self employed was from being a bike messenger, a set up that makes you take more risks than you normally would and still leaves you with long hours and negligible profits.

I do understand (all too well) the trials involved with starting your own business, and I can see your point that it would be like having your own business without having any of the start-up costs, but it is also lacking in most of the benifits, including the right to just get on with being a mechanic.

Perhaps you have an idea that's before it's time, but as you seem to not have posted that the position has been happily filled and that all of us should piss off, I'm guessing you are having a bit of a struggle.

  • Oh, and getting in internet based arguments is generally bad for business, I recommend editing your last few posts and rising above.

cos i come on the forum and voice my opinion to the current state in this country , but i dont direct it at persons or person , you on the other hand like the chump whos doing alright in his self employment chooses to pick a fight with me . i was born here why should i leave i want to make this a better place not run away !

i am sure your job offer has fine intentions but many really dont , and thats the problem ......

  • Hello,
...Also I would say the glory days of private sector companies 'looking after' you when you are ill, pregnant, retiring are fading away and the public sector is looking like it will follow suit slowly, but surely...

wonder if anybody's going to take up the offer of working for someone who's on a mission to destroy the welfare state and decent workers' rights

whilst pretending that he's not actually your boss so that he doesnt have to provide the bare minimum of social security

    WAC

    ......

I believe you but moaning about it like some Daily Mail reader isn't making this a better place.

You sound like a great person to work for.
    Or not work for.
Or whatever setup it is you're offering.

Companies that did / do actually get involved with their employees well being and support them through the occasional rough patch see a lot less employee turnover. John Lewis being one example I can think of off the top of my head. I cant see your attitude or setup attracting much longevity.

  • What goes around comes around.
I'm doing it, doesn't everyone these days (working FT for 1 company as self employed)?
