fair and entertaining argument from Sargent and Co. The offer is on the table, take or leave (and there will be takers). Is it right? Not really, but that is the world we live in sonny. Man up UK or please do feel free to fuck off.

Perhaps I didn't convey the Littlejohn-esque overtones enough with my original post there. Must work on my ironic delivery...

yeah telling people they should bail their own country if they dont like it does have rather a facist tone to it . nevermind we should better shut up or there will be a bunch of fixed wheel skins at the door . cripes ........

My point was that it is chicken and egg - those that apply to take a role like that justify the next employer using it as proof that it is the way things are, which creates the conditions for someone looking for work having to accept less and less for more responsibility.

Knowing Rob (Sargent), I suspect any worries about him trying to take advantage of an 'employee' are rather premature. He's a great guy and very easy-going, and it is perhaps for reasons of preferring informality that he goes for this approach. Am I right, Rob?
Clearly, this wouldn't suit everyone. Some people prefer straightforward traditional employment, but I can imagine that there may be someone who may look for just such an arrangement, e.g. the many people looking for workshop space to realise their cycling project.
That said, I don't know much about the bike trade, so ignore me if that's nonsense. I can confirm, though, that you're not dealing with some faceless corporate monster, but a man who is extremely passionate and genuine about classic steel frames, and if you're as much of a fan as he is, I can't see why you wouldn't get on with him.

+1
Rob Sargent's a lovely fella and his shop is awesome, it's a little jewel tucked away in the back streets of north London... I really doubt that he's out to fleece some poor lil' bike mechanic... People do like to get on their soap boxes/high horses and jump to stupid conclusions tho'...

+1 Oliver. Its a great shop. Every time I walk in to Sargent & Co I don't want to leave. Its like Narnia in there. Anyone interested in steel racing frames would have an eye banquet.

I don't get the problem. It's just the same as a hairdresser, personal trainer etc. Work onsite, self employed, work within guidelines and charge customers direct.
There are no employment laws issues as you're not employed by Sargent, if you don't want to follow the shop guidelines then you work somewhere else. -

Completely unrelated to cycling, and a long shot...
